If there is a single glaring flaw with American democracy, it's the idea that those who disagree with you are evil. Demagoguery has no place in a real debate. It only makes you look weak, not the person you are attacking.

It's likely I'll be taking a break from P&N since I don't really expect anyone to actually acknowledge my post (in fact, I'm expecting just more jeers). This debate has been exhausting. My hope is that some people will step back from the keyboard for a moment and think before they tear down someone else.

What it does make me feel bad about is the state of debate in our country, and the utter disrespect some individuals have for people who disagree with them. MLK didn't make any impositions on me - he only worked to extend the rights that everyone else already had. You simply don't understand the difference between a right and a demand. You feel that my race makes me guilty of killing a man who died 12 years before I was born. You feel that my race makes me a monster, spoiled by the color of my skin. Personally, I think forums should be self-policing, and the people that continually make this a poor place for discourse should be banned. It's the same people, over and over again, that degrade every thread into an I-know-you-are-but-what-am-I fight.
