A return to where my addiction started

Who remembers Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips. They were a medium sized deal back in the 70's and maybe 80's.

What happened to all of the anglophiles, oh where, oh where have they gone?

edit: now I have to be happy with salt and vinegar potato chips which are barely a shadow of the real thing. Plus, Cape Cod brand chippies burn the absolute p*** out of my mouth's mucosal membranes.

We had a great fish n chips place in Manhattan called St. James gate. Been going there for years but not since covid. decided to go last month and the menu is gone. They were serving sandwiches and crap like that. Claimed their gas is off but its been like that for months apparently. I miss it.

Now you've got me thinking to seek out a local fish 'n' chips joint. There used to be one downtown but figure that's history. I rarely eat fish these days, which I was thinking about last night while watching the 60 Minutes segment on Fogo Island (Newfoundland), which I recommend! The populace of maybe 5000 used to subsist by virtue of cod fishing and cod fishing alone, for the most part. I really like(d) cod. Cod became almost extinct in the N. Atlantic, at least near Newfoundland, due to commercial fishing at one point. It's come back considerably by virtue of regulation.

A search turns up some options but I think the easier path is to make my own. Buy a slab of cod and work up home-fries in my skillet. I just got back from my local indy supermarket. They have fresh fish. Not sure I have bought any from them in decades if ever.

Haven't really gone to Fish and Chips place in a decade+. Last one was maybe H. Salt when I lived in Los Angeles. We used to go to Arthur Treacher's when I was kid all the time, but Long John Silver's seemed to kill them all off. Was never as good. Had LJS a couple of years ago, it was awful.

I have yet to go but have heard that A Salt and Battery in Manhattan is quite good.

In 2012 an innocent visit turned into an addiction. Since then I always have to search out a place to get my fix if we're by a large body of water

Fish quality 9/10
Breading 8/10
Default seasoning 7/10
Nostalgia factor 12/10
The best fish and chips I've had was last year on a ship.
No freaking clue why it was so good.
It was just haddock with crispy batter but it was like crack for everyone who tried it.

People lined up for 2nds and 3rds.
(I turned down the fries the 2nd and 3rd time)

We have a small Fish & Chips chain in CT called Royal Guard and its killer but on the pricy side.

Unfortunately the nearest one is 28 miles from me in Norwalk.

There's still exactly one, in Northeast Ohio. There were a handful in northeast Ohio until 5-10 years ago but now there's just the one. I probably should hit it up sometime soon in case it closes.

I love good fish and chips. We have 2 good places here. My favourite is Archies but they are expensive if you want halibut.

Love me some fish and chips, best local place does walleye, though I havnt been there since covid.
Been getting fresh Lake Trout from the local fishery, which is one upside of living near lake superior. 15 minute drive, $5.99/lb.

I found one outside of DC years ago, but waaaay after their heyday. Might have been 2004, but I can't remember. I was on a job, went out for lunch, and couldn't believe it when I saw them. I had to stop in of course. Everything was a little decrepit, but it was decent in a fastfood sort of way. I wonder if they're still there? I couldn't find it again if I tried.

There used to be another fried fish chain called Long John Silvers that had quite a few locations most of which are now long gone. (there is however one in Hartford CT)

Far as I can recall the place wasn't very good either.

631 of them according to wikipedia

Closest one to me closed down many years ago.

I do remember H Salt Fish and Chips too. There used to be a couple within 10 miles of me.

As far as I know the one in Cuyahoga Falls Ohio is the last open location. It made our local news when the only other location closed a year or two back since that's now the only one in the country 😛. I think there are some Nathan's hot dogs locations that have a limited Arthur Treachers menu but I'd imagine it's not the same as a real full on Arthur Treachers

Somebody should document a fast food tour of Ohio and hit up Rax, Arthur Treachers, Maid Rite, KFC Buffet etc. They're all hours away from each other but there's some somewhat unique stuff across the state.

Hmm....the fish looks good but plantains? I mean I like them but I would probably be disappointed it wasn't chips\fries
