It appears that a savvy customer was paying attention to his router traffic. Every time he changed the channel, his television reported back to LG what channel he changed to. If he hooked up a USB drive to the television, it reported back to LG the names of the files on that drive. This is regardless of whether he had the "collection of watching info" turned on or off.


LG responded saying, and I'm paraphrasing, "neener, neener, it's in the fine print."

I found the "Smart" option on my TV to be PITA. I never use it.

Yeah but it is AWESOME for pushing a streaming and ala carte lifestyle.

Maybe a Roku or an Apple TV (or especially my custom XBMC HTPCs) are better, but the biggest holdup with most people for such equipment is the fact it is another input that you have to switch to.

By making Netflix a button on the TV remote, that is quickly pulling us to a more modern future.

Depends on the router/switch setup. An ACL could just block the tv from accessing the WAN, while still being accessible via LAN.

personally i don't see the point of a "smart" tv.

For me it definitely makes no sense. I don't have cable but i i do have a computer which turns my 65" set into a big monitor via HDMI through my receiver, which is the hub for my home theater/gaming electronics. I can get OTA via an antenna but rarely do so.

Ultra first-world convenience.

I can switch to Netflix or do some light web surfing without having to get up to turn on my PS3, find the PS3 controller (if it still has juice), and wait for the inevitable update.
