I can't share files on AIM or play a game of warcraft 3 on bnet because of "firewall error"

I'm connected to AT&T cable through a router that also provides connection to my bro's PC. where do I disable or fix the 'firewall error'? it's been p|ssing me off quite a lot lately.

I use DLink DI604.. if I'm supposed go to 192.168.0.1 ip address to change the settings.. that doesn't work anymore after I upgraded to the latest firmware... *sigh*..

Yep. You need to search online for what ports those programs use and forward them (meaning allow outsiders to initiate connections with your PC on those ports).

Alternatively, your router may have a DMZ setting that lets everything go to a PC. At least, I think that's what DMZ refers to. Could be wrong.

Your correct, DMZ stands for Demilatirized Zone (sp?).... Basically exposes that perticular computer to the internet.

You need to tell the router to forward the proper ports to the pc running those problems. IE: if a program needed port 901 and your PC's lan IP is 192.168.1.01 you simply tell the router to forward port 901 to that IP. (you get into the router's settings by typing its IP into your browser).

AIM doesn't work because during direct connect it uses your computers IP address (probably 192.168.1.*)
instead of the routers address.. It's basically a screw up on their part and you cant do anything about it.

Same problem with many routers.

Guys he can't even get into the settings...

Try unplugging the thing and resetting the power first. I don't want to freak you out, but it's possible your firmware upgrade could've f^cked it up if it was interrupted/incomplete somehow. Anyway, try unplugging or hitting a reset button... and try connecting to 192.168.0.1 from your bro's PC too. If it goes to Yahoo search results, try pinging 192.168.0.1 (or 192.168.1.1) to see if it responds. Your router is your "gateway" or "proxy" ... check your PC's network settings to verify gateway IP too.

the router's ip is 192.168.0.1, and i can't get in anymore like the above post says.. wtf?

IE works fine on both PCs that router is routing to. AIM works fine for chatting as well..

but i cannot send or receive files on AIM anymore (i used to be able to) and play games on battle.net.. all with the same "firewall error"??

how am i suppsoed to change the firewall setting if I can't even get to the router setting?

Hmm seems like you cant even access the routers setting page right?

Try resetting to factory configuration if its possible, turn off the router. Remove your PC's network cards ect, and reinstall it. Restart PC. Turn on router again and see whether it initiates with your modem and then with your PC.

And yeah your IP192.168.0.1 should be correct so hopefully it works after reset.(mine happens all the time, so all I do is reset it.)

One more thing... don't forget that a firmware upgrade CAN reset many settings... including the gateway address (your router)... make sure you know your router's IP... maybe it was something else at default before it may have been possibly changed to 192.168.0.1. Linksys routers default at 192.168.1.1.

If you do a "netstat -r" at a command prompt, you can find out your gateway address too.

i share on IM all the time. so that does work. works fin over my lynksys router. have 4 comps on it and it works fine. i get 10Megs/sec useing FTP or AIM Get File between the comps

What about outside your LAN ? I remember AIM has a checkbox that you can select if you have a problem with file transfers. Didn't have much luck with that either, but for some, that may solve the issue.

thank you, i see bunch of ip#s and i typed freakn all of them one by one in IE and NONE of them work... I also clicked on the reset button which restores factory settings on my dlink di604 router but still same symptom.

i think i should just return the damn router and exchange @ bestbuy tomorrow..

I don't think theres much you can do about AIM.

But you can't play on b.net? Warcraft III works perfectly fine through a router. If you want to host a game, then you just forward 4000, and 6112-6119.

firstly, you need to be able to get into your router. maybe firmware upgrade reset password? config?

secondly, make sure your computer's ip address is in the same subnet as the ip address your're entering into the router, otherwise you'll never be able to connect to the router.

thirdly, at the command prompt, ipconfig /flushdns to clear your pc dns buffer (or just bounce the computer).

i don't use your brand so that's all i can say. ps: these el cheapo router's DMZ sucks - if you have anything important on your pc, don't expose it to the net for a long time!
