Can I get your stuff for cheap when you go out of business?

OK I was joking (sort of). I won't say it definitely won't work, but here's a data point for you. I am in my early 30s, lives in Brooklyn, grew up playing computer games, never owned a console, don't have a 4K gaming setup but plays a handful of games regularly, and can afford to go to a place that you described.

I can tell you that I don't really have interest in going to your place. Why? Because going to a public place to game is not actually something I want to do. So even if I am into 4K gaming (I'm willing to try it, but I have a feeling that it won't really matter to me compared to 1080p), just that downside by itself is enough to dissuade me from coming to your place.

If this idea of yours becomes popular and I actually now know some people who go there? That could change things a bit. But until then...

marketing will change your mind.

Not so sure, seeing as his account was created solely to post this thread increases the troll factor by at least 4 points.😀

He stuck around and engaged in the debate with a pretty tough audience, so I give him points, especially since 75% of the first-time posters here probably aren't even human.

And I stand by what I said earlier: the fact that everyone thinks OP's nuts is something OP shares with just about every other entrepreneur in history, at some point in the lifecycle of their idea. So who knows?

OP's idea is like trying to resurrect the ice-distribution buisness a decade after refrigerators were introduced into the american home.

Still haven't seen the OP post WHY he thinks folks in NYC would want to go to a PC Gaming lounge. Then again he hasn't even said WHERE in NYC he wants to open it.

It'd be out of business in 30 days in Chelsea or the West Village. Anyone who is into PC Gaming there would have their own rig and besides, there are too many better nicer things to do. Take it to Times Square for the tourists and you're competing with the Dave and Busters that is on 8th and 42nd. Take it out to Brooklyn and, well, people there are way too hip for that noise. . . unless you've got a great drink menu and a cozy atmosphere.

Seriously, I had a friend who was a successful chef at his own restaurant lose everything when he tried to open a second place and couldn't get a liquor license for three months. I can probably name 20 restaurants and businesses that have closed within the past 5 years in a three block radius around my home.

I started a business from nothing and now it's successful. I came up with tons of ideas just to give my brain some exercise, but those failures didn't make me a successful entrepreneur. Knowing the difference between a viable plan and how to execute it versus having an idea and no plan whatsoever are, in my opinion, the qualities that make a person an entrepreneur. I'm an engineer, so that's just my $0.02.

Exactly. This business model was tried and failed (at a good point in time), so the OP has to have some new idea to make this old model viable and there isn't one.

4K is basically saying "we update our shit". If there was a viable gaming lounge anywhere they would be eying 4K as well.

Concession stand/alcohol? Check.

Club atmosphere? Check.

Maybe make it into a strip club? Instead of lap dances you get boobs to the back of your neck and them cheering on your fragging?

No question, and I agree that not every successful business is founded on a novel idea that generates initial skepticism. Although there is usually _some_ skepticism even if the idea is generally recognized as sound. That might revolve around the ability to execute, or whether the market is ready, etc.

So it's probably more balanced to say that just because everyone thinks your idea is nuts doesn't mean you won't be successful. I would also distinguish between the idea, and its qualities, and the quality of the planning.

That sounds like a good description to me.

These already exist. They're called strip clubs. If you really want to bring this idea to life, proposition strip clubs to install console games and TVs that you will maintain. Personally, I'd rather focus on the task at hand in that environment, but maybe you'll find a niche market. Maybe computers would work as well, but you'd have to get the girls to wear helmets with a flat surface so you'd have a place for a mouse and keyboard.
I'm sure he was aware of that all ready.

😵

We don't have those here. I'll have to look that one up.

not sure if srs? 😕

//edit

Looking at the wiki I'm shocked there are only 60 locations in the US. There must be (or used to be...) 20+ in SoCal alone.

//edit2

As of November 1, 2013, there are 59 Shakey's Pizza restaurants in the U.S. 50 U.S. locations are in California (all but one in Southern California), and the remainder are located in Auburn, Alabama; Homestead, Florida; Waipahu, Hawaii; Renton, Washington; Pasco, Washington; and Spokane, Washington.[2] There are three locations in Mexico.

well that explains it.

Thank you all for your opinions on the situation. I have reconsidered doing in this city. Maybe I can do it elsewhere but not there. I only wanted to know what people thought about it and you guys get all up in arms when I argue with you about your opinion. An opinion is just that.. and opinion. My message to everyone is that you have to believe in yourself because no one else will. The level of cynicism in this thread (by that I mean comments that go beyond my initial question and attack me personally) is insane. I came up with this and various other business models irrespective of my level of education or whatever else you guys believe. The truth is that some day I believe I will find a way to make this work, maybe not in the city but somewhere. I will definitely consider adding other features mentioned in the article. I already had food in mind and ftr this is targeted at middle to upper middle class kids who occupy a substantial portion of nyc. Thanks again and God bless.

Your idea was stupid because you wanted to lease out a venue in the middle of NYC. That's just plain retarded for a gaming lounge. If you want to do something with games you can use MLG's model. Rent out venues and gather enough people to prepay for tournaments. There's less risk involved when you don't have to actually pay the landowner thousands in rent every single month.
