I apologize to Czar for my rude comments. Not a very Christian attitude I know. That article just got my blood boiling, but I've cooled down since eating lunch.

When NEWSWEEK interviewed the families and friends of the passengers of Flight 93, they all imagined their loved one in the hero?s role?whether it was a grandmother whaling away at a hijacker with her purse or a disabled sister tripping a hijacker with her cane. In a sense they were all right; resistance?fierce, unyielding resistance?was the spirit of Flight 93.

On one of the many news shows after 9/11, one of the wives of the fallen on flight 93 said that God had "willed" her husband onto that plane. Sad really, that God decided to take her husband's life by "willing" him on the plane, yet He couldn't "will" the terrorists off.

Horrible position they were all in... forced to make the decision to either sit idly by whilst the hijackers exert the force of the plane onto public territory, or to forceably risk the lives of all on the plane by confronting the hijackers. I say they're heroes for having the ability to make such a decision

Beamer asked her to promise to call his wife if he didn?t make it home. He told her about his little boys and the new baby on the way. Then he said that the passengers were going to try to jump the hijackers. ?Are you sure that?s what you want to do, Todd?? asked Jefferson. ?It?s what we have to do,? he answered. He asked her to pray with him. Beamer kept a Lord?s Prayer bookmark in his Tom Clancy novel, but he didn?t need any prompting. He began to recite the ancient litany, and she joined him:
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
?Jesus help me,? Beamer said. He recited the 23d Psalm. Then Jefferson heard him say:
?Are you guys ready? Let?s roll.?

God bless these guys. :( I've read this story dozens of times and I cry every time I read it. :(

In this case, an "eye for an eye" saved Washington D.C.!

I just don't see how people can read stuff like this, and in the same breath, bash religion and say that fighting a war in Afghanistan is wrong, that we should have sweet-talked and negotiated with the Taliban (Czar denounced the war in another thread).

Zwingle - none of us knows God's plan for us and any attempts by us to understand that plan will fail by the virtue of the fact that humans are fallible. I hate when people say that God "willed" this or athletes give credit to God when they win, etc.. Does God hate the losers of the game? Does he love others more or less by getting them up late so they missed Flight 93? I don't think so. The trials that are placed in our paths define us and allow us to grow on our life journey. Or not! Free will is given to us by God, we can chose exactly which paths we want to go down. He does not nudge us one way or another - we make those choices. When people say that there was a "reason" that "Jim" or whoever was on that plane/train/automobile, the reason was that "Jim" got a ticket for that flight! God doesn't pick and choose who gets wacked and who lives - that is us humans seeking to understand the senseless way in which our loved one died. We always want to think our friend/spouse didn't die in vain, some glory should be attached to their demise. That way we can feel better about the crime that was committed against us in our time of need...

What those people did was amazing. I often wonder what I would do in a tough situation like that. I only hope I'd have the guts to do what they did.

edited to remove the OT comments.

Boy it's a good thing you know what is best. I'm surprised God hasn't hired you on as a consultant.

Let's say God gave the terrorists a flat tire on the way to the airport. So they miss their flight. So Instead of taking the plane down in a field with 60 people dead, the terrorists take over a whole section of the terminal, with oh say 1,000 people in it and slaughter them all one by one.

Wow it's a good thing you told God to keep them off the airplane.

Hind sight is 20-20. You never know what COULD have happened. You have to accept what did happen. All things happen for a reason.

Good gawd, GT. That's really over the top.

I mean, I agree with your general opinion on this, but the delivery is just plain rude.

Eh, those would have to be some pretty big boxcutters to kill 1,000 people with them.

I like this sentence from the msnbc article.

<<Osama bin Laden is said to have thought that the United States has become soft and weak (a judgment he may have been reconsidering as he fled from cave to cave last week, chased by U.S. commandos and bombers).>>

And they are heroes for making the decision to kill the least amount of people possible, given the circumstances. If there's one thing American's can do, it's tell some jackass to FVCK OFF OR GET FVCKED.

Actually, their decision to rush their captors was that of self perseverance. i.e. save their own a$$es first! The "least amount of people possible" in this case was themselves. This is normal, and I would of done the same. There is no evidence that both pilots were dead, thus the obvious plan was to overpower their captors and have the pilots resume control of the aircraft. I don't believe that they did this to spare people on the ground.

I believe they felt they could overpower their captors and regain control of the aircraft. They felt they had a chance, allbeit a small one. If they firmly felt they were going to die and that this was some sort of a 'sacrafice' then I'm sure most all of them would of contacted their love ones via cellular/air phones. But they didn't.... only a few did this. I'm sure if the passengers in the other aircraft knew their fate, they would of done the same thing.
