My grandparents were from Iowa. They fought about politics until they divorced. Grandpa was a union man and staunch Democrat, my grandmother was a dyed in the wool Republican.. .why the hell they ever got married I'll never know, but they stayed married over 30 yeard IIRC.

Somehow the Dems have lost the rural vote, even though they normally provide much more aid to rural residents than Reps. Kind of ironic that the DFL stands for Democratic Farmer Labor. It does blow my mind. Farmers feel they are self-made men and don't want government on their backs, which is a talking point of Reps. But you better believe they will take farm subsidies and claim its their right. Dems often push increased environmental regulations on farmers which may be a factor.

They probably legally couldn't. People forget that divorce in America was practically illegal for most intents and purposes until like the 1970s. I forget the exact ruling (it happened in the UK first I believe but quickly found footing here) but it created a no-fault divorce option, but prior to that you basically had to prove that one side was cheating (like had to have them admit to it in court - which might have been a literal crime in some areas), or had to have like several people (including like pastors and shit) and both sides sign off that it was unworkable. Even abuse (marital rape was still legal in much of the US) was not grounds for divorce. Hell today, there's still 3 states that require both parties signing off for a no-fault divorce.

While I feel bad and sad for some of these people, there is a much bigger picture at play here - we have long passed the point where they are not only their own worst enemies, but they are my worst enemies too.
