Yeah, I know. Still, I just hate it when I see people doing stupid crap like that. It just irritates me and sometimes I don't feel like backing down. Believe me, it drives my wife nuts if she's in the car and I do something like that. Being right is not better than being alive.

THat's when you should have then slowed down to the speed limit just to piss him off some more. Any time I see someone doing something like that when it's illegal (going straight from a turn lane or on the shoulder, or whatever) I will always not let them in and make them sit and wait.

I had someone pull that on me while going around a pretty dangerous curve on a highway (text) . I was in the right lane going over the speed limit, there was a motorcycle in the lane next to me. The guy barely made it past before he hit the bridge in that picture (and the shoulder ended). My girlfriend was in the car, so I didn't do anything stupid.
OP, edit your title to indicate the illegal shoulder passing. Otherwise, as you have seen, many people just read the title and ignore the 1st post and assumed you were in the wrong.
(Edit: This is not to the OP but to the people who say they never let people pass on the right lane (as opposed to shoulder)
I let people pass me on the right if necessary. Sometimes you don't want to get into the right lane because there's a lot of traffic and inevitably you end up letting 30 cars pass you and you can never get back in the left lane to pass some slow truck that's in front of you. In those situations it is preferable to stay in the left lane and let individual cars pass you on the right since you can never count on someone being polite enough to let you back into the left lane to pass really slow traffic in the right lane.

Reminds me of one time i was driving and I needed to make a right turn, but couldn't because this dick stopped his car in front of the light on the right side of the lane so he blocked the turn lane.
people who sit in the left lane and/orarent passing the cars in the middle/right lane = asshole
people who purposfully speed up to keep people from passing them= need to be put in jail for wreckless driving...your not the cops..stop trying to be on...on top of that all you do is make the situation worse...so just move over and quit being a dick
people who pass on the shoulders= either have a HUGE emergency or are just plain crazy. When i got in a wreck...they took me to hospital. when they called my dad to tell him...he asked them if i was ok...they said they didnt know...so, naturally feelig i was serriously injured (i was not, for the record...) he did everything he could to get to the hospital quickly which inlcuded having to pass some assholes via the left shoulder becuz their were dicks like some of you who would slow down in the left hand lane....you should all be a little more considerate of others when driving...you dont know their situation. if you think something should be done about their driving...get their tag and call the cops...
i admit what he did was dangerous and might have placed others in danger...but if you thought your child was serriosuly injured or was dying etc...you wouldnt exactly sit your ass in the right left hand lane waiting for everyone to get out of ur way...

I learned that here in Socal, most people riding in the left lane (fast lane) will not merge to the lane on the right to let you through. You can be riding on their a$$ and they will not budge. Now I just go around them.
In smaller cities (I travel up and down Ca often) the people seem to be more courteous and will get out of your way if you are going faster than they are.

Actually, there are assholes that will pull to the right of you to turn right at a red light, and barely sqeeze in. I've noticed that a lot, and now have a tendency to check my passenger side mirror before turning right at a light.
How about the jackwads at a three way intersection that pull out infront of you when they should wait 5-6 seconds more for your to pass, then they can go..
I had one do that this morning.. here I am cruising along at 70km/hr, and this asswipe pulls out and proceeds to acclerate as fast as a self propelled lawn mower.. So I had to slow to 40km/hr.. Then the tailgunner slams on his breaks pissed off at me because I ended up getting maybe two car lengths away.. POS.

A couple exceptions:
1) If we are all in a left-turn lane and get a left-turn signal onto a 2 lane road. Legally I make the left into the left lane, then should change lanes to the right (rather than making a 'wide' left). Problems come up when some Speed Racer behind me follows my butt through the left, then veers around me instantly (usually still in the intersection) to overtake in the right lane. LET ME MOVE OVER! I'd be out of the way and to the right in seconds if they just give me 2 seconds!
2) Construction: On my commute for almost a year now, everyone has to merge into the left lane where the road reduces for the construction. We all line up and wait except the few arses who overtake EVERYONE waiting thier turn and then ram into the head of the line at the last second.
3) Similar to #1 above, there are a couple highway ramps around here that (stupid design) make you merge in on the left of the highway. In this case, if I'm not going fast that day (read wife and kids in car), I merge as far over to the right as quickly as I safely can, except for the couple idiots that are behind us and also merging, but they literally veer across 2 or 3 lanes in order to overtake everyone else - thereby delaying us actually getting over to the right where we should be. Give us a couple seconds to move over to the right and then the left lane is all yours!
OTHER than the above, you are pretty much correct that people who get passed on the right are almost certainly hogging the wrong freaking lane!
Although it was hard to read, this is true. I absolutely hate people who purposely hold traffic because they personally think the other drivers don't need to drive faster than them. People have gotten hurt around here because of that and/or have had their cars damaged.
And most probably deserved it.
