A Highway Patrol friend of mine just pulled over a Lexus @145mph

I got pulled over by a prisoner transport van back in my speeding days.
What state was that in? Here, in OR, I've seen someone pulled over by what looked like an ambulance! There's also an old unmarked beater-looking mid-80s car here with badly oxidized paint and a different color driver-side door! 😀

I must be the luckiest bastard here or something...I was in a really bad mood (argument with dumb gf) one morning driving through southern OR. I had recently moved from Salem to Medford and had been visiting friends in Salem.
Anyway, I make pretty good time on the drive (in my Porsche) and about 5 miles from my new home, I come up on this pack of probably about 10-15 cars. I switch lanes and blow by them doing 120+MPH in a 55 zone. Of course, as I pass them I looked and saw that the leader was a State Trooper! I coast down and switch lanes and at the same time he tries to get behind me but we end up swapping lanes. So, he switches lanes again and pulls me over. He was pretty cool (all the State Troopers I've run into have been) and asked if I knew why he pulled me over. I looked straight at him and said, "Yeah, I'm pretty sure of why you pulled me over!" We BSed a little bit (told him I had been driving all night, didn't realize I was going that fast), he took the usual documents, went back to his car to run the info, and came back. He gave me my license/insurance card back and told me to go home and get some sleep! I thought for sure I was going to jail and having my car impounded. I think he knew I let him catch me. I still had a gear and a half left! I drove home pretty slowly after that. 😉
I guess that and one other "incident" make up for all the crap, undeserved tickets I've gotten. :|

It was in Oregon, headed up westbound HWY 26. He pulled me over at exit 57, about a mile before that is where I passed him. It was a full size passenger van, dark blue, with a police logo on the side. The thing that should have clued me in was the light bar across back of the roof.

😀

Heh, down here in South Texas, the police encourage high speed chases...contrary to their "canned public news statements" that they are doing "everything they can" to cut down on "high speed criminal pursuits." :|

If you scream by a cop on a sportbike doing 120mph, you'd better speed up, b/c he's coming after you. You can't outrun Motorola though. Get down the road apiece until you have several turns b/t you and him. When you know he can't see you, turn off onto another road. Keep going. Make several more turns, find somewhere to park, get off the bike or out of the car and just walk away.

We have lots of long, open roads down here. Most times, there are no other vehicles on them...and that's where they hide. 🙁

Speeding on public roads is very dangerous, though. You could hurt more than yourself. Take it to the track.

I know this post is contradictory. It's supposed to be.

I almost never mess around anymore and if I do, it's never around any Fords/Chevys. I've seen too many crazy unmarked cars!

It's almost pointless trying to outrun cops here in the Dallas area - state troopers still have a couple of modded 5.0 LX's and some LS1 based Z28's not to mention traffic helicoptors that pickup on chases as soon as it hits the CB

I've heard some stories about some relatives of mine. When they were younger, they would drink all night then drive home at about 2:00 in the morning. The tavern wasn't far from their house, but it was far enough. If the lights started flashing behind them, they would just pull over as quickly as possible and run home as fast as possible. In the morning, after they were sober, they would go and pick up the car. A cop would contact them and no one would know what he was talking about and since they were already sober, they couldn't get charged with a DUI. Also, since the police wouldn't know who the driver was, no one could be ticketed for running. 🙂

I thought you could be ticketed for running. "Evading law enforcement" or "Resisiting Arrest" ?

Said like a man who has never seen 145 🙂 It is vastly different.

And yes, it should be done on a track, or somewhere that you will be the only one hurt. Have all the fun you want, just don't endanger others. Or as the saying goes: If you have coin, buy what you like, but do not reach into anothers pocket.

That being said, I know a RX300 will do about 130 (on the speedo at least anyway.) I happen to own one.

Speeds over 100 require 1000 times more mental concentration. I regularly burst up over 130-140 on my bike. You approach and pass things tremendously fast. However, on a smooth concrete slab Interstate, the ride is remarkably stable and smooth. Any movement of the body though causes great changes in direction. You have to be easy with the controls. Riding a bike takes a lot of coordination, practice, and mental preparedness. A headlight and tailight cut off switch also aid in losing the Po-Po. I had mine fixed when I could still use the high beams with the factory thumb switch.

Yes I am.

But speed is my rush in the wee hours of the morning on lightly traveled roads or the occasional track day.

Okay here's the story:

I guess this lexus was coming down to heber from Park City @ 90 when he first clocked it so he hit his cherries and started to cross the median in the highway. The lexus saw him coming and gunned it. By the time his crown-vic cruiser got up to speed, the lexus was gone. He radioed ahead to another cop down the road a bit, and when the lexus passed him, he was going 145mph. They had to put up a road block to stop him.

In Texas, the state troopers drive these: link. 😉

You are correct and there are several cities in Dallas that use them specifically for tickets and pursuits. I have run (and gotten away) as well as stopped for one on 635 and 30 last year. That 105 in a 60 ticket hurt, well a little. I guess it depends on my mood and the traffic conditions at the time.

Yep, I can attest to that- see them frequently around the D/FW metroplex. I remember two summers ago, there was a line of EIGHT of those things sitting on an on-ramp, with a cop standing on the overpass popping people above on Ka-band radar. He'd nail one, and presumably radio the others, "get the white Mitsubishi Mirage: 82mph" and one by one, those Z28s would launch down the on-ramp and nab their prey.

hmm... or it could be your car sucks. 😛

edit: if you drive a heavier car you'll feel little difference. As it should be.

I can second that. Lexus gave me an RX300 as a loaner when my Lexus was getting a tune up .... It was pretty smooth for being that speed. I approve of the RX300 🙂

-My Lexus topped out at ~150 (I was watching the road not the speedometer) and I can tell you... 150 is evey WAY different than even 135 let alone 110... after going that fast I decided not to go above 80 for a while.

-My Landcruiser once made it up to 118 ... but that was with a tail wind hehe damn thing is too slow to get any faster

-2000 V6 Camry will go 130 also

-My neighbors Porsche 944turbo did 145 in a 25 zone (It was a 50 zone... but people "live on that road" but their house is a quarter mile back of the road so its really more like a country road). That is the most I have ever been above the speed limit. That was just obscene.

Any my local law enforcement has a mustang 5.0 ... which is nice and all until you find out it is a SALEEN :Q😕 The car has been used successfully in high speed pursuits where the cruisers couldnt get up to speed. For the record, I would never outrun a cop unless I was on a motorcycle. Then I might think about it.

WORD. I've seen Tauruses and Impalas pull people over- even Mustangs. They look just like company cars! :Q

That would actually be pretty cool to see... as long as it wasn't through your rear view.
