a friend of mine is a COMPLETE IDIOT

He's talking about overclocking a 2.6GHz Northwood to 3.114GHz and needing to seal the case and fill it with mineral oil in order to keep it cool. In order to work on the PC, he'll have to "un-seal it" and work on it, then re-seal it after filling it with mineral oil again. His "friend" in the Navy knows all and tells him all. If he doesn't go with mineral oil, he'll get freon.

That sh|t apparently is expensive...

Apparently his case will weigh 75lbs when finished. 😀

"i don't know anything about overclocking, it is being done for me."
"just realize that your friend is pulling a fast one or actually doesn't know shit"

This is frustrating when someone says to someone else "hey I'll build you a fast system and it will require these things and cost you a frickin fortune" 🙁

i wouldn't waste my time with a rig for that kinda cash when it'll be publicly available in a year or so.

-=bmacd=-

OMG LOL! 😛
I've never heard of that, and P4's do not get that hot. I have a 1.8A and I have it right now at 2.5 stable. It really isn't that hot either, and I don't use mineral oil.

He's getting dual 21" monitors and is going to run them off of the same card: the Radeon 9700. Not the Pro, the 9700. I haven't been able to talk him into the Pro for the kind of money he's spending on the system. Apparently "all the newer cards on the market today have the option of dual-monitor support on one card"

this guys A FRUIT!

and to think I graduated with him 😉 😛

Uh... all the parts that he's using are publicly available now.

Oh, and another thing. He's getting pc1066 ram. 😕

Apparently pc2700 is another designation for pc800.

You can use mineral oil...but yes he ist totally jacking your friend. Most people who use mineral oil put the mainboard, processor, and all add-in cards into a mini-fridge, then cover the entire rig with mineral oil. The cables for the PSU, fd, hd, cd-rom, etc are housed in another compartment seeing as they have movable parts and can not be submerged. I really don't think its worth it, mainly for more braggin rights. Sealing the case with mineral oil is rediculous, considering the mineral oil would more or less always be room temperature +, which you would be better off with a water cooling rig.

I had a friend tell me that he was too scared to put a computer together b/c someone else told him that ALL computer mobos needed something to be soldered for it to work properly

It is my seasoned observation that pretty much anyone who purposely enlists in the military (as opposed to entering through ROTC or Officer Training) is a complete tool and fundamentally flawed at some core level in the brain. The Army and Coast Guard are the worst.

Then that's your problem for not having the same sense of duty as some of us do. Don't knock us because we join. Be happy you have someone to protect you by force :|

Your seasoned observation. How old are you? 10? My seasoned observation is that anyone who makes statements like that is a condescending, pretentious, f-tard with a highly exaggerated opinion of her own intelligence. Not to mention being an asshat.

And that's being generous. Lord help us if pudgy little cowards like amnesiac 2.0 had to defend our freedoms in time of war. Fortunately the Drill instructors probably would save our enemy the trouble and kill them off themselves. No big deal, just another pugsly Mofo not around to pollute the bandwidth with his false sense of entitlement.
