Will ANY software install on the Beta at all? Is it natively 64-bit?

And...worth downloading?

Added very initial impressions to my first post.

archcommus: It's worth trying out IMO.

I haven't even started installing stuff yet. Won't have time till teh weekend.

I'm trying the 32-bit version, since i am wary of 64-bit support still.

Do you need an ATI or NVIDIA card to get all the fancy GUI stuff? I'm running a 1.6 Pentium-M, 1GB RAM (2GB by next week) with Integrated Intel Xtreme Graphics 2.

I plan on dual-booting with XP SP2 (once my Vista Beta 1 download finishes from Microsoft)

I'm not sure how well the GUI would run with integrated graphics, but i haven't even installed the drivers for my X850, & the fancy window effects work smoothly.

As for games, i don't have HL2/CS, but i may get UT2k4 on here eventually.

I just wanted to get Vista installed tonight. Programs are gonna have to wait till weekend when i get more time.

What do they need to fix? The average OS install is around that time. The only reason WinXP installs now take all of 20 seconds is because processor speed has increased an assload since WinXP came out. Compare installing XP when it first came out to now.

I'd say about 45 minutes to maybe 5 now.

But they are saying that the final Vista will install in only about 15 minutes.

... Where the HELL is the menu bar on that Explorer window? AND WHY IS IT BELOW EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE IE WINDOW?

Christ. They broke the formula. Bye, Windows.

Looks like ass.

What exactly is the idea behind/major improvements Vista and why is it so revolutionary?

Almost seems like another millenium to me (with os x and firefox ripped off)

No one is saying it's revolutionary. Not me anyway.

It really remains to be seen.

Frankly, it feels like XP + some stolen ideas with a shiney new suit to me, but hey...:p

i think the problem is that if it looks too much like XP then poeple wont feel like they need to switch, unless they can promote some key changes other than transparent windows.

looks like a xp/osx hybrid or something that of a windows blinds theme. Nothing too exciting in my opinion. The things that we're worthwhile i.e. WinFS was scrapped last time I heard :(

I'm glad WinFS was scrapped, would have messed with my very fine-tuned traditional folder organization.

Is it just me, or is the new look of Vista look well... crappy? I guess almost anything is better than the default Win XP fisher-price abortion theme, but those screens look like it's getting out of hand. That could possibly be one reason it's sucking 400MB+ of RAM. I'll wait until the final version to pass judgement however.

I say using 1/8 up to 1/4 of total system memory is okay. By this time next year most of us gamers will have two gigs. So 400MB wouldn't really be a big deal. PLUS it's the first beta. So it'll be fine.

IE7 rocks, a friend of mine is a MSDN subscriber and I got to use his laptop. It's quite nice.
