A few goodies found by accident at SVC.com

Hi All,

I went to SVC to find one of those PCI slot plates with Molex power connectors on it to bring power outside my case. Well, I found that (got the one with the external SATA connection too) and added it to my cart. Then I decided, what the heck, I'll check out the Clearance section - a dangerous thing for those with low sales resistance 😉 . I don't know how, but they still have some of those CM Mystique 631 aluminum cases, black w/window there for $35 after rebate + shipping. Considering those were $100 cases, it's not bad even if shipping is high.

. When I went to the CM Global English site to see what they had about the adapter bracket (nothing, I guess it's DCed), I saw they have the new version of the CM Device Module out (STB-3T4-E3-GP) that has a bezel on it and stepped sides (have been flat up to now) to fit in most any case w/o mods - nize...

The nice things I found there today are the CoolerMaster 3.5" external bay adapter (for floppies, etc) in silver (aluminum) color - not hard to change it to black or whatever color you need. It is made of aluminum so it's light but sturdy enough to hold just about any 3.5" external device. These have been discontinued and aren't readily found - one place I found via Froogle is asking $25. for them! SVC has been selling them at $10.00 but now they are only $2.00. I also found some 10-packs of thumbscrews for only 75 cents - can always use some of those, so I added one to the cart. Got the whole order for less than $12 shipped by First Class (light orders). Can't beat that! They have standard, straight red generic SATA cables for 99 cents, etc.

Hope you enjoy your visit to the SVC clearance dept !

the new CM 4n3 HDD cage is the same as a the Silverstone version now..except different face plate

nealh,
. I doubt the CM drive cages are made of aluminum like the Silverstone (which I reviewed here: http://www.techimo.com/reviews/). But I guess the cage IS made of aluminum, but the mounting plates aren't as thick and the bezel is mostly plastic.

I thought the second version of the original CM cage was too light (they went to thinner steel) as mass helps damp vibrations. But if they tuned the bushings right it could still work. IAC, they are still unobtainium here in the US.

Zepper,
I'd like to find the PCI plate you found (the one with the e-sata connector on it). I browsed all over the site and couldn't find it. Could you provide a link? The search function on their site doesn't appear to work so I was forced to just look through all sorts of listings by category.

Thanks.

Hey Gus,

Just search on- PCI power -and you'll find the few types they have. But here's the link if that's too difficult... Oh, SVC doesn't always use SATA in its titles on SATA related products - they use several variants of Serial ATA a lot.

They also have similar items that will fit in a 3.5" external bay in case you'd rather have the connections on the front. You'll find those under bay products like fan controllers.

Thanks Zepper. Just ordered three of them I bought a Cavalry 500 GB e-Sata external drive to transfer large files between several computers and this is the cheapest I have seen the external Sata slot adapters. Each computer needs a way to conect to the drive.

AFAIK, those slot plate SATA ports are normal external SATA extensions (hooked tongue) while true eSATA has a straight tongue and more shielding. So depending on the connector on your external drive, you may need an adapter.

Zepper,

Too bad there is no way to get a beer to you over the internet, since I certainly owe you one for saving me $16.97. I called SVC and sure enough the connectors are Sata, not e-Sata. But because of your reply, I got in in time to cancel the order. I already have three adapters I can't use which I ordered from another site that advertised them as e-Sata, but turns out there is a smaller square e-Sata connector used for a proprietary drive. Useless to me. Glad my collection of useless adapters will not grow to six.

good thing... reminded me to check and I bought that $2 AR cooler master HSF.
I'll pick up my order tomorrow, save me the shipping cost

Hey Gus,

YW. I'll take you up on that beer if I ever see you...

Maybe this could work for you: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16812119021 but if your external drive really requires true eSATA ports on the PC, then you'll have to buy an add-on card for each system as extensions like the one linked don't provide the extra juice that true eSATA ports can source. Or maybe this: http://www.svc.com/sata7p-11.html.

I just read the specs on the Cavalry 500GB w/ USB and eSATA and it says it comes with a SATA to eSATA adapter cable and bracket. Wait until you get it and then buy a couple more like the one that comes with it - maybe available direct from Cavalry. Also if the drive is a SATA 2 (300MB/sec) then you may have to jumper to 150 if your boxes don't have SATA 2 controllers in them (unless already done).

Package arrived today - they shipped it Priority instead of First Class. 3.5" external adapter has steel rails, aluminum front - would look good in most aluminum or silver cases and even black for a little contrast. PCI power and SATA bracket has some nonstandard wire colors - need to trace it down with meter to be sure what's what. Some of the ends are hidden by molded on boots so you can't tell just by looking - need meter or continuity tester. The thumbscrews aren't very red, just a light wash over gold colored plating, but great for the money - they have the pointy ends to guide them into the threads.
