I believe the preferred term is RESmonkey

lol

I might just go with "mentally challenged." Cognitively impaired sounds like a clear winner, but I don't think it's a word I could type around in the essay. Too...fancy.

Thanks guys

The official diagnosis is still Mentally Retarded, so that term is appropriate and accurate.

However, I believe the field is shifting towards adopting Intellectually Disabled instead...which is sad, in my opinion, given that the newer term is much less specific.

You could just say something like "mentally handicapped", I think that will still get the point across.

Yea, thats not accurate at all. Maybe "intellectually challenged?"

In Counterstrike, the term used is smacktard, which is commonly used after you've flash grenaded your own team.

Yes, the term "slingbladers" is just fine.

I've seen "differently abled" used. It made me gag, but there it is.

Yes, "differently enabled in the head" is also acceptable or its acroynm DEITH (pronounced deeth), as in "Deeth people don't like to be called retardths".

It isn't universal yet though and some people prefer to drop the T or both the T and the I and pronounce it deh (not to be confused with duh).

the interesting thing is that the actual meaning of the word "retarded" is one of the most clear-cut and accurate ways to describe the condition. this isn't like calling them stupid or idiot or dumb. but unfortunately, since it has been co-opted by people to be interchangeable with "stupid" as an insult, the accurate word has become the offensive word.

Welcome to Retardation, A Celebration. I'm Wilford Brimley. Now, let's dispell some rumors. One, retards don't rule the night. They don't rule it. Nobody does. Two, they may not be as strong as apes, but don't look them in the eye. It might make them go into berserker mode. They'll come at you like a whirling dervish of fists and elbows. And you may be saying 'No, no, no', but all they hear is 'Who wants cake?' and trust me, they all do. They all want cake.

rofl.
