In 2000, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that 25 breeds of dogs were involved in 238 fatal dog bites from 1979-1998. More than 50% of the deaths for which the breed was known were caused by Pit Bull type dogs and Rottweilers.*
Rottweilers and Pit Bulls were involved in 60 percent of the 27 dog bite fatalities that occurred in 1997 and 1998. Rottweilers were involved in 10 deaths, and Pit Bulls were involved in 6.
In 1997 and 1998, at least 27 people died as a result of dog bite attacks (18 in 1997, and 9 in 1998). Of these, 19 were young children between zero and 11 years of age, and 8 were older children and adults between 17 and 87 years of age.

Wow...238 fatal dog bites in almost 20 years...NATIONWIDE?! Do you realize how many pit bulls there are out there? As someone else said, when they decide to attack, rotties and pit bulls have much more chance of making it deadly because of how much power they have. That really doesn't mean that they are as a whole a bad breed. I mean, look at you r stats...6 fatal pit bull attacks in two years...SIX. How many pit bulls do you think there are in relation to how many commited a fatal attack?

So, we are to write off all PB's in the country because 6 of them killed people? Dogs are like anything...some are agressive, and some are not.

Feel free to buy into all the hype though....

Oh, and nice link from "dog bite legal center"....

I agree.. Who fvcking cares about 6 people. I bet more than 6 people died from trying to open a can of peanut butter, while standing on a wet slippery floor, under a clean load of silverwear sitting in the dishwasher tray, and falling head-first into the silverwear.. and then being shot by a thief robbing their house.

NP...we are actually discussing this right now.

Basically, IMO, you can look at all the stats you want, but it still boils down to the temperament of the dog in question. There are so many factors involved...

This is one of the saddes things I have read in as long as I can remember. I swear to God that if I were not so far away I would come and get that gorgeous dog, despite a houseful of cats. But there is like 1,000 miles distance or something... dunno. Way to far to drive to get her.

what a gorgeous dog. what loving and trusting eyes. if you are meant to keep that dog, things will fall into place. in the meanwhile, please tell me what county you are in and i will do a web search for no kill alternatives.

Alachua or Bradford County (FL).

My sister found a pit-bull rescue in Ft Lauderdale, but it's ~3hrs away. She has connections, so hopefully something will be worked out. However, we will be in PA/NJ on Friday, if things go well with the move.. ;)

If I wasn't basically responsible for the family now (parents were just divorced, so I have to stick around and help my mother get on her feet..homemaker for 20+ years), and had my own place, I'd definitely consider keeping her. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be in the cards now..

there are some no-kill shelters listed HERE (scroll down a bit)

if these are not located near you, ... hopefully, they can give you info on someplace that is closer.

Gainesville Pet Rescue would be our best bet, I think. We'll have to check & see if they take all breeds.

If we had more room, I'd consider crating her and driving her to NJ for ya..we'll be going through there on our way to NH..but six persons' worth of stuff and a single 5x10 trailer doesn't leave much room. :(

I'd bet you a hundred bucks that those dogs came from a bad background. I grew up with a Rotty and adopted a Pitt 5 years ago, and I still have all 10 fingers and toes.

Your numbers don't tell the whole story.

Our nieghbor's son gave us a pit pup about 5 months ago,
it's shown no aggresion to anyone, as long as they are
properly " socialized" as pups should be no problem.
They are however aggresive to other animals and with
a small dog or cat in the house MUST be watched carefully.
Mine in particular HATES squirrles and will try to climb a
tree to get at them. She hasen't caught one yet but they
are very, very nervous.....

And i would take her. hahaha... it would disrupt my life, and drive this houseful of cats insane and the b/f would be like WTF!!!??? but one look in those eyes and he would melt, especially since he just picked up Casey's ashes from the vet last week.

i love animals. soooo much more than ppl. i am weird like that.

:)

i really hope that this all works out for her.

I typed out this big long post about figuring a way for you to keep her, but I reread the post and see there is no way. Pits are like any other dog, only quite powerful. They can be as sweet as any breed, or as mean. She looks like a good one, and somebody would be lucky to get her.
Good luck man!

so have you fed the poor creature?

I don't know..I hope so - my sister bought food, but everybody's sleeping (including the dog), and I don't know where she put the food..so I can't really check for sure. There's seven people in the house now, and I can't keep track of all of 'em at once. :p

I'm going to sleep..I think I'm the only thing awake here, cat, dog or human. :p

Maybe more pics tomorrow, if you all want them. :)

Edit: The cat just got up. Apparently I'm not alone! :Q
