Yesterday, another dog came into the yard, and she ran it off..to the gate, then she came back. Seems like she considers this home now -- and we haven't been feeding her either.

My mother talked to the local police officer today (yes, that's singular...lol)..apparently she belongs to some crazy guy who lived down the street -- he disappeared two weeks ago, and police are looking for him (he's wanted for something now..in the past, he used to steal mail from mailboxes..also stole his dad's police cruiser and pulled people over with it..).

I don't trust her too much with the younger kids (there's a 10yo and 13yo here)..but she's a sweet/friendly dog..unfortunately, due to her breed's unpredictability, there's no way I'd be able to keep her.

she has adopted you. she wants to be your family dog. maybe she just wants a stable, normal doggie life, after the craziness of living with the homeless man.

You're more than welcome to come adopt her..but unless we figure something out, I can't:

1) 10yo in the family
2) 4yo nephew that we'll live with for a short time
3) We have a cat..I'd prefer her to stay alive
4) Nowhere to put her for the 1400mi move

I dunno man..maybe something will work.

Rolling over and showing her underside is the dog 's way of showing submission. In essence, she has accepted you as her superior. She looks like a nice dog. Please adopt her. please.

He wasn't homeless...the house is vacant now.

She might be the best dog in the world, but there is no way I'd trust my kids with an unknown dog of that particular breed.

No dog catchers out here..heh..there's only one cop. :p

We could easily bring her to animal control or somewhere like that..we'll probably have to. Sadly, she'll probably be put down.

:| :| :| :| Ass. PUT HER UP FOR ADOPTION. She's a sweet dog. Just because you don't trust her with your kids is no reason to set her up for a death sentence.

Relax...

Adoption might not be the best either because sometimes people adopt them for the reason of making them mean...

In case you haven't noticed, I don't have all the time in the world.

If you care so freakin' much, pick her up. Don't read me wrong -- have I not said that I'd like to keep her? However, I put people before animals -- and I don't even have a week to find/screen people to take her. I would love to bring her to a no-kill shelter - don't think that I won't try. Your assumptions are only going to make yourself look bad.

My cousin kept pits and the rep they got is largely undeserved. They can be well-trained and obedient pets just like any other dog. If you are concerned about it being around younger kids, then just tie it up when they're at home.

It seems that the dog has already shown its true colors with its being submissive with you. Just because its a pit, doesn?t mean that its going to attack you or small children. Pits are given a bad rap by irresponsible, retarded, and trashy owners.

We kind of adopted a pit the same way you did, it was just on our porch one day. Best dog ever, although a little stubborn at times, it wouldn?t hurt a fly. We had lots of dogs in our neighbor hood and she would just mind her own business, but if another dog came around looking for trouble, it would find it. She never once started a fight with another dog, but she also never backed down from one either. She was a good dog, kids would ride around on her back any everything, great with cats, kids, you name it.

I don't know her history..she'll usually sit on command, and I had her stay for a few seconds..but other than that, I don't have any idea what she's had. Heck, I don't even know how old she is..or if she's 100% pit.. :p

As I told CadetLee via IM, I don't think she is a pure pit. Her face structure looks almost more like a retriever than a pure pit. I'm no expert though. Also, IIRC, male pits are the ones that tend to be more agressive....females are usually much more laid back.

Well from what you've told us about her it doesn't seem like a violent dog. Ultimately its your decision to decide if you think it's safe enough or even worth the trouble of keeping around. If you can't get someone to take it off your hands then offload it to the police officer and see if he can do anything about it - if not then sadly the dog will likely be put to sleep. Sucks to be a homeless dog.

The pits by their nature are good with kids but protective when they see "unfamiliars".

Have you ever watched the pet cops from the ASPCA on Animal Planet? Just about every other episode they show some nice lady from the pound doing an evaluation on a new dog (well, after he/she's been there a few days and is well fed). Anyways the dealbreaker is always when the lady, using a broomstick with a fake hand on the end, pulls the food bowl away from the dog. Half the dogs looks at her with puppy eyes, and the other half of the dogs tear a finger off the fake hand.
Evals are good.

due to her breed's unpredictability

That "unpredictability" is a myth. Every Pit Bull I've met has been a perfectly good dog. It is all about the training that the dog recieves (yes, some dogs are more prone to be agressive than others but there is NO dog that can't be properly trained to be a good dog. Pit Bulls aren't any more aggressive than any other of the aggressive breeds (German Shepherds, Rottweilers, chihuahuas, etc.)

As you said, its previous owner was a nutcase. THAT is a reason to be wary of the dog, not its breed.

1. I have no idea what you're schedule's is like, how the hell would I know?
2. I quoted your very own words about probably putting her in a kill shelter
3. There are plenty of groups that you can give her to who will put her up for adoption. Petfinder.com will list locally available shelters to put her in.

Good luck, I hope she ends up in a good home. Bless you for taking good care of her in the meantime.

We're hoping to leave Wednesday (FL -> NH). :(

Thanks for the suggestion, though - we might give it a try :)

She's such a nice dog..but I can't bring myself to trust her too much - my uncle has a ~4yo kid..too much to risk.

2) I was just saying what the officer told my mother when she talked to him.

3) Thanks for the link.

Its a myth that Pitbulls are unpredictable. Pitbulls are very loyal and make great family pets. The one thing that does seperate them is the fact when agressive they have the strength to kill. She looks like she has puppies not to long ago either. Dalmations are maybe the most unpredictable dog breed. As for watch dogs types the Doberman is easily the flakiest.

Well Datalink already address the myth.

Wow..........ignorance is bliss, eh??

For any of you claiming that pit/pit mix unpredictability is a "myth"..............

Please call your state's Insurance Comissioner and request reports over the last decade on "in depth" studies regarding both Pit and Pit mix breeds and their place in Homeowner's Insurance Underwriting.

You will quickly be learned on the exact unpredictability of these canines and why they have been recognized........(notice I did not say "become" because it's always been this way, it's simply taken serious notice in the last couple decades due to the dog's popularity).............as a HUGE insurance liability to everyone!!!

If you try to execute a "standing jump" over a Lamborghini coming at you at 150mph you may very well survive it. Need I dare say that the odds are against you???
