So I had been using poweramp for quite a while. It worked ok, never perfectly, but I'd say 90% of the time it did pick up where my song/podcast left off when I unplugged it. But then all the sudden it would start playing some random song every time I plugged it in. wtf? It would play songs I never even once listened to. wtf? So poweramp is gone.

So I am still looking for an app that will always remember where in the podcast it was when you unplug the headphone cord and then plug it back in. Does such an app seriously not exist? Is android truly that bad?

On a side note, audible does remember and work exactly the way any music app should. Unfortunately I cant load all my podcasts into audible. But it is proof at least that such a simple feature is indeed possible.

PowerAmp has been my go to music player since the Droid1. However, on my Note 3, it seems to have gone insane. It seems that it CAN'T WAIT to forget where I left off. Unplugging or plugging in headphones... Connecting or disconnecting Bluetooth... All of these, intermittently, make it lose it's place. But not always. It's maddening.

I still love PowerAmp, but the "resume" is severely flawed. Unfortunately, it's the best non-podcast audio player I have found.

I keep meaning to drop a note over the PowerAmp people. I've got no experience on Apple products, but the best media player of all time for me was in Windows Phone 6.5, with a program called PocketPlayer. It had a resume that never failed. I loved it.

For podcasts, I'll vote for PocketCasts as well. I love that app!

Can PocketCasts play files stored locally? If I tap to open an audio file in dropbox will I be given the choice to play it using PocketCasts? If so then I'll try that program. It being specifically made for podcasts must mean the resume feature has to work correctly.

Poweramp does work like that. I don't understand why you're having problems, but it's designed to resume wherever you left off. Maybe it's a bad version or something, but right now it not only starts where I left off... it will automatically boot poweramp and start playing even if I'm on the home screen when I plug my headphones in. It doesn't get much simpler than that.

What is happening is that PowerAMP has scanned your device and added all the media files to its library. So when you get done with the Podcast it simply goes onto the next file in the library it created. It is not "random," it is working as intended.

The issue is that PowerAMP is a music player, not a Podcasts app. You are expecting some sort of logic that when you are done with the podcast it needs to basically quit doing the play on headphone pluggin feature. But to PowerAMP that podcast isn't special, it is just another file/song in the library. So when its done with that podcast it moves onto the next song.

To fix this problem, edit the PowerAMP library so it ONLY is looking in the folder for your podcasts. Then its only source for the library is the podcasts. Worst case then when it is done with a podcast it will move to the next one you downloaded automatically, but at least that isn't a "random" song.

I also don't know what is wrong with Pocketcasts. For me it pauses when I unplug and plays when I plug everytime when the app is running. It is not as aggressive as PowerAMP can be (aka if the app isn't running and you plug it it doesn't launch and start playing), but maybe that would be good given your usage case. I would think between the two you would could get what you are wanting.

Ummm, no. Just no. I would be in the middle of a podcast, then I would unplug the cord and the podcast would stop. Then 2 minutes later I would plug it back in, and some frickin random song would start playing. That is NOT working as intended.

At any rate, Pocket Casts is capable of playing any media in the "custom folder". So I just synced that folder up to my podcast folder in Dropbox, and all is good. So far it is remembering correctly, we'll just have to see if it can remember after I hammer my phone for a few hours before going back to playing the podcast.

I've tried pretty much every single free music player for android, and DoubleTwist is, as far as I'm concerned, the best.

God bless you! They keep that custom folder hidden very well! This is exactly the answer I was looking for!

From now on:
PowerAmp for music

Pocketcasts for anything "long".

Life is good!

Yep so far so good. I hammered my phone with 40 updates, a reboot, and an hour of gaming. Got in my truck this morning, plugged in my phone, and it was ready to pick up where I left off yesterday.

I always had nothing but issues with poweramp. I'm skeptical of the engine/architecture quality considering it can't even handle CPU throttling with screen-off. Audio decoding is an incredibly computationally cheap algorithm, something a 25mhz (yes, twenty-five) is more than capable of handling. That PowerAmp needs at least 1ghz to avoid skipping/hitching when playing with the screen off (and the priority and buffer size made no difference) is fairly telling.

PlayerPro can handle all the way down to 300mhz no problem.

PlayerPro has and probably always will be my favorite audio player. Everything works on it. Consistently. Always. Nothing goofy. No funky configuration required.

Oh, and PowerAmp doesn't play well with bluetooth audio awell at all, either.
