First and foremost, *please* do not take any of this as an individual criticism. The following is a general statement about all of us, NOT one person, and everything I'm about to say applies equally to myself as well as everyone else...

I think it's hilarious how we (meaning people in general as well as our AnandTech community) go to such great lengths to show our individualism - from pierced eyebrows, and creative hair styles, to personalized license plates and neon colored cell phones. We criticize, both directly and indirectly, the establishment; we scoff at pop stars from Michael Jackson to Britney Spears (yet why do so many of their albums sell?). We ride the latest 'alternative' band until too many people like them, then we label them 'sellouts' and jump to the next one that the music industry feeds us.

We are SHEEP. It's hilarious! I've done it, you've done it, we've all done it. The quintessential sheep herd was when an asian member here, trying to fit in, mis-used the expression "sucks", and said "____ is suck!". Now it's the most common phrase at AT...until now.

I wonder why the new "all your base" line is so funny. Is it because we can all picture the little Japanese programmer who thinks he's writing correct English? I don't know. I have to admit, this never really made me crack up - but plenty of "pop phrases" have, including "wazzzzup!" We're all sheep, and those of us who try the hardest to be individuals often end up being the most silly (I still remember my college days, when virtually all of the REM fans wore the exact same hair style in their statement of 'individuality'...lol. Eventually, I became an REM fan, and they moved on to something else). I remember when Vanilla Ice was the scorn of the country...and now you see little white kids who haven't met 10 black people in their lives, being 'gangstas'. LMAO.

Oh well - just enjoy it. If you don't like this craze, don't criticize them too much - pretty soon you'll be the one quoting the next Budweiser commercial, wondering why your neighbors "just don't get it"...

:)

I'm one who never falls into trends. I hate fads, but this is one that I can't pass up! It's just too damn hilarious :) I see where you're coming from, and if you ask me this forum has that kind of tendancy. From the "is suck" thing to everyone bashing Lozer when he was around - half the people did it cause everyone else was. Same goes for making fun of ricers, if you ask me, half the people do it to try to make other people snicker about it. Don't get me wrong, I love this place! If I didn't I wouldn't have been here since '99, but you do have a valid point.

I wish I could comment, but all my base does not belong to me anymore. :(

Rio, and now, like sheep, we will all fall in line and post our reply that we are not sheep and don't fall for the general trends like all those sheep out there ;) hehehe

I find it funny, but I'm not sure why. Just watching the little flash movie with the hopelessly garbled English makes me snicker. I think it's just like if one of your friends accidentally said something backwards and you both crack up even though it's really not that funny.

Of course, when other people are making such a big deal out of the one line "ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US" it just makes the whole thing funnier. People going to all this trouble making images and music videos (!) just to honor a goofy line from a totally obscure video game is inherently humorous.

Perhaps the video has subliminal messages? ;) It's spreading itself around the net, creating it's own cult following...

Baaaaa.

;)

I don't know why I find it so funny, but "I am Dyslexic of Borg, your ass will be laminated" cracks me up too (still) and the whole wazzup thing doesn't. Humor is an individual thing, and I take it where I can find it. Nice post, Rio. :)

The "Dyslexic of Borg" line is my all-time favorite. After hearing it about 1000 times, I STILL chuckle.

Actually AT is one of the last places it is hitting, so if you arent an ostrich with your head stuck in these forums, you were really already sick of it months and months ago.

"base bashing"? Is that kind of like being a "playa hater" in nerd-ese? ;)

And check your sig before you start slinging the term "sheep"...;)

I remember the first time I got sucked in. I was about 7 years old. My mom and grandma wanted me to wear these new bell bottom or flared pants. I said no way. Regular jeans and cut-offs were fine by me. But for Christmas they all ganged up and bought me flared plaid pants, wide belts, balloon sleeve shirts and made me put them on. I'll be damned if it all didn't look good!

What are ya gonna do? Who here would crawl out of bed, with their hair all scrunched up and just go out and face the world like that? And why not? Are we so vain? Uh, YEAH! I don't know where you draw the line between vanity and consideration for others. I mean, ya gotta shower, so that you don't offend other people, but do you have to comb your hair for 20 minutes? Do ya have to color it, spike it or spray it to be considerate? NO!

Who here buys a particular vehicle because it's cool rather than pure function? I'd say about 80%, Maybe more. I hate getting sucked into it, but it's hard :(

Rebel, I agree w/ you 100 percent...I think its obvious that everyone is a sheep in some facet of their life...there's not much you can do about it except not be a total lemming all the time :)

Pretender, you started it here when it was already old on other forums though :p

but I guess you're the sheep heared on anandtech heh since you did start the craze here

like I posted before I was sick of this phrase long ago...when I first read about it - it was hilarious...now there's irc channels, many flash movies, gifs, etc.

Out of hand.

Speaking of poorly translated video games, does anyone remember Metal Gear for NES?

Yeah thanks Bo Peep... I was already getting tired of it. Now when I come to OT I have to read someone's witty variation (or verbatim repetition) of the script in every single thread (even in non-AYBABTU threads). Yeah, you're all hilarious and clever, but even the funniest joke ceases to be funny when it's told a gazillion times.

Good point, Rio. People want that thread of community that connects them to others. I was LOL at the comment about the alternative bands; while the alternative scene doesn't appeal to me, I have friends that you described perfectly. The band gets popular, and suddenly "they sold out".

Butchered translations like AYBABTU is one of those things guaranteed to get a laugh out of me. I still laugh at the list of funny foreign hotel signs (Belgrade elevator: "To move the cabin, push button for wishing floor. If the cabin should enter more persons, each one should press a number of wishing floor. Driving is then going alphabetically by national order.") though I've seen it a hundred times. And I posted about this toy label a month or so ago. I have no idea why those things strike me so funny and other things don't.

I think "is suck" will survive in the long term because it is totally AnandTech - it's our own and is like a "password" that identifies the bearer as part of the AT crowd.

Yeah, I admit, I stole it from other forums, but I guess my job is to propagate bad and annoying crazes from one forum to another.

BTW, rio, when I said All your all your base bashing threads are belong to you.
I meant all the threads which bash "all your base..." are belong to you.
I'm starting to agree, this is getting out of control, but sometimes being a sheep is fun :)

I thought dennilfloss dragged that shiznit in here:
  • ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US!!! dennilfloss Date Posted: Jan/22/2001 4:49 AM

Dammit! I can't get this stupid sentence out of my head. :Q

I have a lecture to give tomorrow morning and all I can do, as I lie in bed trying to sleep, is look at the ceiling and laugh maniacally. I am so scared that I will start my lecture on bivalves (clams, mussels, oysters,etc...) by saying:

ALL YOUR BASE are belong TO US!!! :p

Bwahahahahaha! This is worse than I'm blue dabadi dam da....

Good night all. I'm going to try and sleep again.
