A/C ducts on the outside of house, wtf

Nothing is shocking in the land of foodstamps, Section 8 and creative crackpipe construction.

Looks like an old house so it may have had radiant heating originally - ie. no ducting. That's not exactly easy to add if it wasn't part of the original design of the house without some major remodeling.

It's likely just an outter sheathing that's insulated with the actual ducting inside of it. In fact you can see the verticle piece flashing up against the house. Ideal? No. Better than nothing though as it doesn't look like there's too many windows for ventilation. Not everyone is at ATOT baller status.

Yea, prolly a round piece of ducting inside it, maybe the attic has been made into a living space so no place for it there. Gotta say though, it looks like shit, surprised it's not some sort of code violation.

Like others have said, it probably is insulated. Is that much worse than modern houses with the A/C and ductwork in the attic at 120F?

Not exactly the ghetto...

Its a college area. That house was probably converted into two separate apartments. Also, there was a construction ban in the area beginning in the 1970s (it was recently lifted), so the area around campus is pretty much all old shitty houses and apartments.

Ducts for my 1.5 floor are under the crawl space. Would hate to know how much per year that is costing me. If I had known back when I bought the place that housing would go to hell a couple years later delaying my moving plans I'd have probably paid to have them insulated some time ago.

One of the things duct tape is no good for is...ducts.

Because it's not "duct" tape.

It's "duck" tape

a heavy, plain-weave cotton fabric for tents, clothing, bags, etc., in any of various weights and widths.

LOL that has to totally suck in winter. I have seen hvac systems where ducts are outside, but it's usually a very short run with a large supply/return that is insulated, and the distribution is done indoors. This is just hilarious.

What makes me laugh is when I go to home depot the duct tape is in the duct section, and the "real" duct tape (aluminum type) is an isle down in plumbing. I pointed it out to staff and they just looked at me funny.
