the "subject matter " on this drive wasn't worth backing up, but alas, it's gone as is the drive that once held my 100GB+ anime library...

This one was a 250GB with all my shows and drivers:|..oh yeah, and live radiohead shows:|..a BUNCH of them...:|

Strangely, I want to yell at WD, but only for a little....just have so much going on.

Back in the day I would have yelled at them for hours on the phone...

:sigh;

I stopped using WD drives due to poor reliability. There are still people who swear by them though.

basically....I'm actually giving thought to just fvkign it and giving my server away to a friend who loves to tinker with stuff.

Frankly, besides as an SSL VPN gateway and a point of backup, it has no other purposes and sound like a Merlin Engine...

I feel your pain. I've had at least 3 Maxtor 250GB go out on me. Not to mention the infamous Deathstars.

As much as most people want their data back, spending 600 dollars for data recovery isn't an option. It's not worth it for most people.

I love WD, I have an old 20GB WD HD that is still spinning. Bad luck OP, you might be able to get the data back but it'll definitely cost you.

You can go even one step further and backup the data two places as well for less than $50! Get some DVD+RW dvds and a old hard drive. That way if the dvds fail you have the hard drive backup, if the hard drives fails you have the dvd backup

I like to keep two external hard drives. The data on one is a mirror of the data on the other. I don't trust DVD+RWs as there can be bad burns you don't find out about until later.

What about DVD-Rs, DVD-RWs, or DVD+Rs?

Check it, or make a double burn.

What if 1 document is corrupt and you have thousands of documents? That's what I thought. Double external drives is more expensive but undoubtedly a better idea.

What if you get a virus that erases both your drives?
