I used to have a Maxtor in my old computer and it broke like ****** clockwork - every March or April I'd get it RMA'ed. After the warranty expired I brought a WD, which has been fine since. The WD in my current comp has been fine (knock on wood) for 2 years now.

I've had several Seagates and Deathstars die. Oddly enough, I've never had a WD or Maxtor die.

Go to WD's site and pop in the serial number from your drive-you'll get an RMA for a new drive. I've RMA's 6 drives in the past 6 months

What if 1 document is corrupt and you have thousands of documents? That's what I thought. Double external drives is more expensive but undoubtedly a better idea.

What if you get a virus that erases both your drives?

That's why you have two and leave one disconnected until you are ready to backup the backup drive.

Sorry, but all HDDs die.

So blaming one manufacturer is just silly.

I've had one "deathstar" die (though after like 5 years of use), one raptor (though technically i'm not so sure what was wrong), one seagate barracuda also.

..I've had bad luck wit maxtor. So far out of 3 wd's only one failed and was replaced in warrenty.

very bad luck with maxtor here, all 3 of them I ever owned have died. I have switched to wd recently. got a 320ks drive and a 74gig raptor now. Also had a seagate go bad as well.

Are there any tell tale signs of a soon to be failing hard drive?

I've had a couple random instances that have me a little worried. i.e. clicking on a program stored on my slave drive, and having windows say it can't find it. Only to look and see that windows can only see one HD. had to reboot to fix it.
a couple other random things, but similar to that.

edit: both hd's = seagate

ws having problems with my WD a few weeks ago, I couldn't get Spinrite to scan the entire disk, then I switched the SATA cable and Spinrite finished, stupid me I thought the drive was ok, SMART tested good and Spinrite reported no issues. So I'm re-adding my mp3's to winamps media library and I hear it click. Gonna request an RMA tomorrow I hope I can save the info off it, ARGH 2nd WD I've had go out on me in a few years. But I also has a 200 gig Seagate die last year. I have the worst luck with drives

Hard drives fail. Your favourite hard drive brand drives fail. That brand you really hate also fail. There's not much huge difference in the brands. However, there's just no excuse not to make backups. DVDs are cheap as chips now and infact so are hard drives; there's no reason you can't have secured your data from the inevitable. Odds are it's just a matter of time before your drives crash so the more you can safeguard it now the less whinging there is when it happens.

two weeks ago, my WD 120 GB just went clunk clunk clunk at start up, and i could not access it at all.

The only really important file i had on it was my car maintenance log on it, which i didn't have a back up.

IME tho, these drives tend to die in sort of intermittent phases, so last week i tried to access it again, the computer stalled a lot but i was able to recover my file.

2 WDs = 1 dead, clunk/grating of death
3 Seagates in my computer alone, 1 in my HTPC, and I think 5 in the computers I built for my dad's office = 0 fatalities

My first Raptor died because, wait for it, corrosion filled up the SATA connection. I mean, it was SOLID full of corrosion. No reason for it; I don't live in a humid area or anything. My RMA Raptor has been going strong for two years.

i've had HDs die on me too. But I was able to recover the data by sticking the HD in the freezer for an hour and then plugging it back in to copy the data over to another HD. For some reason, this has always worked for me. Just watch out for condensation!

External HD's ftw. Well worth every cent. I should invest in two when I get home. Not everything is backed up at the moment, and losing data would suck. Burning dvd's is a pain in the ass, even though it is cheap.

I"ve had maxtors, wd's, seagates, fujitsus all fail on me. HDs fail.

I've never had any problems with my WD drives. Only ones Ive had issues with are seagate and IBM... Sorry about your loss.
