I never paid much attention myself but before Christmas when I bought the lumber for my garage knowing the prices would probably creep back up by summer, it was like $3.75 for a 2x4x8.

I have to say I've been lucky overall. Last year the prices were high too, but I bought the lumber for my deck the year before and it sat all winter. I wanted to start the deck that summer and never got around to it. Then this year I want to do the garage so I bought when the prices started to come down and bought at a good time. The lumber is still in my garage and it's almost tempting to trade it in for a Tesla... lol.

It's fucking crazy here too. In "the lumber capital of the world," a pressure treated 2x4x8' is $13, a pressure treated 4x4x8 is $26.
A year ago, the 2x4 was less than $5, the 4x4 was around $7.

I knew we were screwed when depot and lowes switched to digital price tags instead of the normal stickers in the lumber aisle

Gotta admit that color coding the denomination of your currency is kinda OK, but where it's green, framing 2x4's are $8USD. But it is "whitewood" what ever the hell that is.

And ain't you all into the metric stuff, what the hell do you know about a 2x4, even though they have been downsized.

And what the heck is your sales tax, 14%?

Unfortunately we're still stuck with imperial when it comes to building materials, though I tend to use metric when I'm measuring and cutting, it's easy to take the tape measure and measure something like "45.3cm" and then go on a piece of wood and mark the line, than some weird fraction stuff. I can just count the lines and do the same but it's easier to deal with that when there's only 10 lines.

Though if I'm building something where the lumber dimensions play more a role I'll tend to use imperial. Like for a building I will do something like "12' x 8'" because no sense in trimming material if I don't have to.

MD. DC suburb area Home Depots.

Out of the two DMV states and DC, MD is the shittiest.

Even the "countryside" isn't cheap property tax wise or housing value-wise.

But, business is booming, and so is craigslist free section....700-900 free listings.

Yeah, this is another example on how supply side inflation is becoming a problem. It's not just video cards and game consoles that are in short supply anymore.... certain food items and lumber are now in short supply as well!

Hell... I just went to a carnival in Connecticut this weekend where they were charging $4 for a Sno-Cone. Yeah... $4 for about 6 ounces of shaved ice and a squirt of flavored corn syrup. Insanity.

I think things will settle down by end of this year or early next. Runaway inflation fears are overblown and wrong IMO.

The lumber manufacturers caused it by expecting behavior to happen that did not happen and instead the opposite happened.

They will not miscalculate again next year.

IDK you might be right but my distributers are telling me something different. I've never had to place orders for next years product this far in advance.

No offence to anyone here but if you're not in retail you just won't get it. The supply chain is fucked right now.

Here's hoping this stuff does settle and go back to normal within a few years and that prices don't just stay higher for everything. Inflation is a very bad thing as is, don't need it increasing more. That's a whole different subject, but something really does need to be done about inflation as a whole since it's making our money go less and less further. I find I have way less disposable income now than I had 10 years ago because of inflation.
