Just wondering if the A-10 30mm depleted uranium guun can penatrate the M1 Abrams tanks?

I remember hearing stories of how indedstructible the M1 is and how powerful the 30mm DU cannon is.

Cheers,

I think the speed & accuracy made the Abrams what it is. I don't think it has enough armor to do anything about a shell like that in a direct hit.

Yea, along with all the other technological advantages like satallite and the ospreys flying overhead.

I would think the A-10 would win merely based on the fact that they're made for tank busting and I think current advances in tank armor are like reactive armor to repel larger shells, not a larger number of rounds from the a-10.

M1A1's aren't very heavily armored. In many ways they are the sniper rifle of tanks. Shoot first, hit first.

Like a hot knife through butter... Not to mention that rounds from the A-10 impact tanks where the armor is the weakest (top of tank)

they ARE heavily armored, just not in all places.

of course the A10 will win, it fires something like 4000 RPM (well, assuming the cannon doesnt melt)

A10's typically fire in half-second bursts of roughly 30 rounds

is that big hole under the cockpit the main gun?

The gun is under the body, what you might be looking at is the air-to-air fuel receptical.

If he's looking at the same thing I'm looking at, he's looking at the 30mm cannon. More pics of it here:

EDIT: Looks like we weren't. I just saw what he's referring to as the big hole.

They fire longer than half-second bursts. Probably closer to 2 second bursts.

That "big hole" is the 30mm cannon.

Captured Taliban and Al-Qaeda fighters referred to it as 'the silent gun'. The rounds hit their target before the target can hear the report of the gunfire.

:Q

That is f*cking nuts. 30mm FTW.

Not a contest, the Abrams would be toast. What makes the Abrams superior to other tanks in the world is NOT the armor. The Abrams has more speed, more range and better gun stablization so that it can acquire and destroy targets before the targets can see the Abrams. The Abrams wins tank-to-tank battles over tanks like the T-72 by being better in just about every regard EXCEPT the armor. The chain gun on an A10 will shred M1A1 armor like a chainsaw going through aluminum foil.

Nah you were right, I thought the hole directly under the cockpit was either some sort of radar/detection device or refueling thingie.

In the pic I posted it just looks like a big hole. Its actually a seven barreled gun :Q

I doubt it. A lot was used in the Gulf War.
