I don't even know what it does :) I just took it from the article. I'm in that 99%. So far, I havn't seen anyone here who is planning on doing some illegal stuff with it.

Speaking of that; I once saw a comment in production code surrounding this horrible routine that said...

"job security"

Of course, the guy who wrote that was no longer maintaining the system :)

As notfred said, it's just for fun. They have obfuscated C contests as well, it just so happens that Perl can be written to look like line noise on a text terminal.

Learning real human languages will probably get you more enjoyment out of life. Who gives a damn if 99% can't read Perl, I'm sure that same % don't weigh 350 pounds and wear suspenders either, which is obviously a good thing. Hurray for the last 1%, the world needs low-level programmers to take care of the sh!t work.
