Much has been discussed regarding current offerings from both camps. Without a doubt we like single gpu powerhouses over multi-gpu solutions. The fact remains however, ATI and nV have focused on multi-gpu solutions for the masses.

If rumors hold, April 1st brings us the 9800 GTX, a mid-range priced card offering better performance than the $650 card of yesterday. The question is, are you planning to buy it??

Isn't it just an overclocked 8800GTS (G92) with a different PCB and an extra power plug required?

I'll pass, wait until the next gen to upgrade my 8800GTS (320MB).
 
NO, since the rumors state that the new 9900 cards will be out later this year - who will want to pay for a product with such a low shelf life just to be outclassed before the holiday season even kicks in ?
 
I can use my step-up from evga and get the GTX for about $50 so I might do it that way....

Ditto, two GTS's at $304 each. $369 is a no-go EVGA, just in case that list price I saw on a pre-order site is accurate..

 
the problem with anticipating future cards is that we don't really know what's going to happen. Sure we've heard rumors of release dates, specs, etc, but we can take it to the bank that the sooner r700/rv770 is out and the more competitive it is, the sooner it is that we'll see gt200.

I'm guessing that the late june release rumor is accurate and that 4870x2 kicks the crap out of 9800gx2, prompting a july release of gt200.
 
I'm still using a 7900GT over here, if the card is on the lower half of $300, I'll upgrade to it. I might consider holding off 'til May and have my Step-Up cover me the entire summer.
 
I'm waiting for the actual reviews.

Although it does sound like the fastest GPU available, so who wouldn't want one.
 
I am going to be buying one tomorrow...I cant wait any more weeks for a freakin graphics card. Plus from the reviews it will do what i will require it to.
 
The price point makes it tempting. But the recent GT200 rumors make me want to hold off. I'd be more inclined to buy a 9800GTX if there were 1GB variant.

um, are you running your e6750 on subzero? 18c is 64f. You could have a million fans and still not get any lower than ambient.

@chizow: from what I've seen, the 174.xx drivers seem to do a much better job of handling aa/af, thus making 512mb sufficient. I'd wager that you see less than a 1% jump from 512 to 1gb on these things. With your gtx you're probably better off waiting for gt200 regardless of the 9800gtx offerings 🙁
 
A few months ago I was one of the people screwed over by the $200 Dell 8800GT deal which eventually resulted in several phone calls and them giving me $100 off of a purchase of a video card from there. I bought an EVGA 8800GT SC for $289 but only paid $189. If the 9800GTX comes out at the $300 price point, it'll cost me under $20 including shipping to step up. Considering it'll give me ~15% better performance and way more overclocking headroom, why not?
 
you're one of the few lucky ones if that happens.

however, evga will probably charge $379 for the stepup so you're looking at more like $90 (assuming they can't somehow find out what you really paid for the card). $20 is a no-brainer upgrade, $90 would make me stop and think first at least. The 9800 is supposed to be a much higher-quality pcb and it will certainly have a much higher resale, so you might still be ok going for it, but you probably won't get much better performance out of it.

At that price point I could definitely see it, but what I have is more than adequate...
