Impressive results! Handily beats a GT @ 650MHz, most likely due to the much faster RAM and resulting increased memory bandwidth. Its pretty good indication that G92 is in fact bandwidth/bus limited, especially with the performance at higher resolutions compared to the OC'd 8800GT. It also performs quite well compared to 9800GX2 and 3870X2. If it is priced at $300-$350 I'd say this is the single card to get with high-end minded folks looking to SLI or TRI-SLI these.

The only thing about the card which bothers me is that at load it looks like it's roughly 60-70 watts behind the gx2. Putting these guys in Tri-SLI would kill your utility bill.

Edit: Not to metion the chart shows it as louder than the GX2

These are impressive results for its 300-350 price! I just wish they would have tested two of them in sli. Can't wait to get it.

I'm not impressed at all. First of all, they're using different drivers for the 8-series and the 9-series cards, so that might give the 9-series better performance by default. Secondly, most of those tests were run without AA or AF, which is not only unsuitable for $300+ cards, but will not show the memory bandwidth limitation of these cards. I already know the g92 is BW limited... the memory on my 8800gt can OC to 1100 mhz, and that alone gives at least as much improvement as OC'ing the gpu by similar clocks.

Those are valid negative points, but there are also positive points.

$300-350 price
Runs at very cool temperatures (although at the cost of fan noise)
In some of those tests it performed as well or better than the gx2 (although the gx2 relies on sli support and has awful drivers etc)

That's not half bad . If it is sometimes on par with the 9800 GX2 I guess it beats an Ultra , correct ?

That's pretty worthless. $299 and not a dollar more and they might have themselves a sale though. Even then, it's time to up that memory controller. This should be the 8900GTX no doubt (if even to have that honor).

Shameful, Nvidia. Unless you price this right.

Hopefully this will push ATI to get the R700 out ASAP...and then Nvidia with the GT200

Indeed. After selling my 8800GTX on ebay for $300 and seeing how close this performs to a 9800GX2... I'm having second thoughts about getting a GX2 now, especially if history repeats itself like for the 7950GX2...

Looks like I'm going to have to slug it out on my P4 3.2 ghz FX5600 system until next week to see more conclusive results...

Shame on you NVIDIA, for tricking all of the people who got a GX2 for TWICE the price... :disgust:

9800gtx is same as G92. Why bother? Overclock that 8800gt or GTS and pretend it's a 9800gtx.

After seeing the benchmarks in games like crysis the 9800 GTX only beat the 8800 GT by like 5 fps at 1600x1200 big freaking deal. Actually in most games the GTX only beat the GT by a hand full of fps.......

Looks pretty darn good to me. My only quibble is the noise levels, but I am sure that will be solved by an aftermarket cooler.

the different drivers is the real clincher for me. nitromullet had rollo check the other day on why nvidia had not released 174.xx drivers for the 8 series...they have a plausible reason, but, happily for nvidia, that plausible reason is forcing them to delay the release of the 174.xx drivers for the 8 series cards for a while (possibly until gt200 comes out and nobody cares any longer?). I wonder if 9800gtx has the same sneaky overclocking feature (or "common sense speed boost" as apoppin would say ;)) that 9600gt has...hmmmm, sneaky oc plus 5-10% boost from 174.xx drivers and you have...a slightly oc'd 8800gts 512.

Is everyone really that impressed by a card that according to benchmarks anyway barely beats a 8800GT? And considering the GT goes for about $190 now it seems to be a better buy...

Hmmm, not bad. If the reported $299 price is right. Then I may have to get this instead of the 3870. Maybe ill get the 790i evga also.

Okay, I'm a fanboy I'll admit. But it's the realist in me that has to vent right now...

As I've said, in this world there are optimists and pessimists. You're one or the other. The same people bitching about this release bitch about everything else in life. Impossible to please. Is this you?

If you think this card's not worth $350, buy a console and be done. WTF do you want for $350?? Would the same card with 512-bit 1GB be worth $400 or would you bitch about that too? What performance and price point would an offering bring you complete satisfaction??

exactly my point: to go from mainstream 8 series to enthusiast 9 series, increasing "generations" and categories and only gaining 5 fps is ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC.

Think 7900gt compared to 8800gtx to see the point.

At Doom 3 (nov 2006 testing that was impressive during the time of the 8800gtx's release):

http://www23.tomshardware.com/...6&model2=711&chart=288

mainstream 7 series to enthusaist 8 series = 60 fps - twice (107%) the performance at 1600 x 1200.

mainstream 8 series to enthusaist 9 series = 5 fps (18%) increase ....

bleh.

And I'm so tired of Crysis. I wish the whole Crysis concept would burst into flames. Crysis is a gimmick. Benchmarking it should be boycotted until further notice.

We do need some new games that are designed for a computer. I don't have a huge monitor, nor want one - so for most games a 2 year old system seems to be overkill.

I dunno, if I could get free 9800gx2 (x2) with a 790i mobo I might consider that a good deal...hmmmm, I wonder if we know anybody who gets that?

I still have a 7900GT. If this card is $300 (I never paid over $300 for a video card in my life) I'm thinking of upgrading to this.
