9600 pro arrived - installed then blue screen :-(

My 9600 pro arrived today, everything was going well new drivers installed and teasting the video out. First thing is the overscan is terrible, so I download the r3dtweak and the ati control panel and straight away a blue screen ati2.dll or something - not terribly impressed at the moment.

The problem file is ati2dvag.dll which is causing blue screens. CPU is 1.4m @ 2.4 on a 865pe gigabyte board, video card is sapphire 9600 pro.

Few things you can try, first is try driver Cleaner 1.9 to remove all traces of old drivers, then fresh install of latest drivers ,also try it not overclocked and see if it makes any difference.

Its annoying, I downloaded the latest versions they installed fine, then I installed the rage3d tweaker and they just destroyed the desktop, I uninstalled that and still no luck. So I am going to grab a spare drive and clean install win2k - this better be worth it, my ti4600 had to be returned again (damaged in transit) so this card had bettter hurry up and impress me or fleabay it goes.

On a plus note the heat from the 9600 on the z80a is amazing, barely warm to the touch.

My mobo is a matx gigabyte 865pe - very limited options for voltage tweaks and no agp options like disable fast writes :-(

You can disable fastwrites from ATI SMARTGART tab,btw Rage3D tweaker can cause problems it`s not 100% perfect.

Everything was working fine, even tried some ati tech demos. SO I thought lets install the ati control panel, restart and again seriously F**cked screen, what a joke. Why in the first place you have to install the control panel after the drivers ill never know. So its either the control panel and the rage3d disagreeing, the control panel is f***ked or I dont know what either way I am not impressed, I have never, ever had this many problems with an nvdia card and frankly I will swap this card for the ti4600 when it comes back. (and breath and relax)

If people are interested the 2d output is OK, but not on a par with my one of my previous cards the xfx ti4200. I am still trying to change the overscan issues hence my need for the ATI control panel (currently a 3/4" gap of black top/bottom on my 32" widescreen which I find very irratating)

Uninstalled the r3d tweaker, drivet and control panel. Reinstalled the driver - everything OK, installed control panel, Before rebooting everything is OK the advanced ATI tabs show up, so you would think everything is OK. But no, when I restart the screen is F**ked, the icons have disappeared, the menus have gone transparent and the display is largely unreadable.

I am pretty certain its no the card as I can run the ATI tech demos, but as soon as that bloody control panel is installed it just kills the desktop, so frustrating.

sound like remnants of nv drivers playing havoc to me. I just took a gf2mx outta my server and installed a radeon 9000 and got similar results. I un-installed the driver and control panel, rebooted, ran driver cleaner, rebooted then installed the driver and control panel and all was well.

i had a similar problem, just use drivercleaner to rid of your old driver files or new install of the os. any of this should fix the problem.

Which version of Catalyst are u using? If 3.6s don't work try 3.5s or 3.4s. And make sure you install the correct version of the control panel. If that doesn't work try Omegas.

I would also uninstall them both, remember to remove control panel first then drivers, after run driver Cleaner 1.9 in safe mode to remove all traces then when you reboot install drivers ,reboot again then install Control panel.

Check the fan. ATI uses incredibly cheap fans on their cards. If the fan goes out you'll get all kinds of strange happenings.

Fans not a problem its using a zalman. I have just reinstalled windows (fresh copy), then dx9, then ati driver followed by control panel and everythings working........but then as I am thinking everything is OK I install the motherboard drivers, network drivers and usb2.0 drivers and it again is showing the corrupt desktop. I am going to try the ATI smartgarp and check the giga-byte site for updates - so frustrating.

Which motherboard drivers are you installing? The only ones you need are the Intel INF drivers, anything else is taken care of by windows xp update. Try to rollback and this time refrain from installing any motherboard drivers except the Intel INF and see if that helps. You should also avoid R3D Tweak for now until you get everything working correclty.

I normally install motherboard drivers straight after OS install, you should try installing ATi drivers last, see if that helps.

Thats my next try, I am currently re-formating windows, I will then install motherboard drivers, directx9, ATI 3.6 and then the control panel. If this doesnt work I am going to get rid of the card, I havent spent a whole day installing a machine in a long while and dont intend to again. Its a shame as I was prepared to try an ati card for the first time in ages hoping the drivers had got better - looks like its back to the ti4600 and wait for the fx5700

edit as a side note everything in the machine has worked flawlessly for a couple of months with a gef3ti500 but a fan came undone and I think I cooked the core doh! so ti4600 it is.

I know how you feel,I went over to ATi but had no problems with drivers or games, infact only had to use Driver Cleaner to get rid of my old Nvidia drivers and my 9700NP has been excellent on stability ,I let you know when I get my first crash or BSOD 😉.

ATI drivers are very good these days. It must be a conflict, but is not ATI's fault I think. It's a sh!t you can taste how good ATI is nowadays. Good luck.

Well after the reformat/install everything is OKish, the overscan is still an issue (1/2" black bar at bottom of tv screen cant adjust any further), and it really does not like booting to just a tv (this is for a divx/mp3/gaming box).
Luckily I have a 'spare' lcd I got for nothing as it has dead pixels, so I have to boot to that then alt-f5 to switch displays - not ideal.
I will play around with it some more, but I dont seem to be getting much more VFM than with my ti4600, which XFX have nicely upgraded to the VIVO version. quick 3dmark 2001 gives 10300 so its performing as I thought it should.

so for anyone interested on tv out quality worst first;

mx440se agp
ati 9000
mx440pci
sapphire 9600pro
geforce3 ti500 (gainward)
xfx ti4200 by a distance
