Most decent hotels have free internet.

Maybe 5 years ago you had to pay for internet in a nice hotel, but most decent hotels should have it now.

I've actually found it to be the opposite.

I'm currently at a Hilton... nice hotel... $150/night for the room, $9.95/day for internet

I stayed at a Hampton Inn a while back... $69/night for the room, Free internet.

I'd be willing to pay $9.95 for 24 total hours of usage, or to be able to use it for the entire stay. But to pay $9.95 and only get 3-4 hours of usage out of it seems a little over the top for me.
That's what I found as well. The more expensive the hotel, the more likely you'll get charged for internet access.

anything you want to know about hotels/networks, i know, ive worked at the same hotel since i was 15, im 24 now, i know more about hotels/conference centers then most anyone.

They want to make money off of it. I was just in Pittsburgh a few weeks ago, and both the Omni Hotel downtown and a holiday inn I stayed at had free wireless internet.

Hehehe, when I stayed in Charlotte I just used the WiFi from the Omni Hotel across the street 😛
Cheap ass Marriott charged 9.95

that's cause they include it in the rental cost

OP, if you're at a hotel for a week and you really want your internet, aren't you going to pay $10 to check your email? it's all economics. if there's more demand for the internet, it's more expensive. if you don't know any of the internet locations, then there's less supply, so it's again, more expensive. i didn't read past the first 10 posts so if someone else said this, just a refresher 😀

Haha you think that's expensive then I hope you never go on a cruise. You will pay up to 75 cents per minute for access that rivals a 56Kbps POTS line. 😛

As was mentioned before, most business-class hotels will charge for it because the people who stay there are generally on expense accounts and the company will pay for their internet access.

ZV

Yup. That's what I'm doing the rest of the week while out of town.

I stayed at a Super 8 motel which didn't have any free internet access(except for dial-up) but a competitor across the street did put out a free strong wireless signal.

Of course, I was just "borrowing" their wireless for less than a hour to check my email and read the news.

This seems to be common, espically in the nicer hotels.

High Speed Internet access is $9.95 per day, wired or wireless.

Why does it cost that much? I mean at home it's about $1 per day.

Is it really that expensive to maintain a wireless network at a hotel? Do guests eat up that much bandwidth? I don't get it.

You seriously can't be that much of an idiot can you?

You think hotels are providing services to only make you feel comfortable? Get real moron, this is life, you provide services to make $$$. FFS, how can you not even remotely understand why they charge 9.95? /yourself NOW.

I don't know... I've stayed at cheap hotels that had free Internet and a 4-star hotel that charged $10.99.

Some use it as a selling point, some use it to make money.

Posting from a Quality Inn using free wireless.

Many hotels that charge, split the fee with the ISP provider.
As long as it can act as a profit maker and the "related" competition will follow suit, they will do so.

Ditto.

$200/night room = No Free Internet
$50/night room = Free Internet

If the hotel I am staying at does not have free internet then I just add internet to my cell phone for those days only. It costs me less than $3 per day and I get decent speeds. Not to mention I can use it anywhere I want.

what place does that? Everywhere I've been (not much, granted) has had free high speed, you just had to log into their system to do it. Went to the service desk to get the passcode

Same reason that people pay $1 for a 20oz bottle of soda, when you can buy 67.6oz (2L) for the same price. Convenience, and because enough people pay for it to make it profitable.

My upcoming hotel destinations:
Courtyard by Marriott, $129/night, free internet
Holiday Inn Express, $65/night, free internet
Doubletree Hotel, $239/night, pay $9.95 a day for internet

More and more hotels are offering Free Internet. Just gota check into that before you choose your hotel if that's a determining factor for you. Also lots of times if you're there for more than 1 day you can get a package thing and pay like $20 for a week or something like that.

But end result is they are there to make money and that's how they do it.

have you ever been a movie theater or theme park? same premise. where else are you going to get what you need? so they can charge a premium for it.
