This seems to be common, espically in the nicer hotels.

High Speed Internet access is $9.95 per day, wired or wireless.

Why does it cost that much? I mean at home it's about $1 per day.

Is it really that expensive to maintain a wireless network at a hotel? Do guests eat up that much bandwidth? I don't get it.

They want to make money off of it. I was just in Pittsburgh a few weeks ago, and both the Omni Hotel downtown and a holiday inn I stayed at had free wireless internet.

because most people that will pay that/use it, can charge it to their expense account/have the company pay for it

so why not?

if you go to the right hotel, it is free. you just aren't staying at the right place if you have to pay

Maybe if your parents pay for all your food ;) :p

Sounds like gouging to me.

Something worth is what someone will pay for it. If someone will pay 100 for X, why charge 50 for it?

Cheap hotel probably.

Most decent hotels have free internet.

Maybe 5 years ago you had to pay for internet in a nice hotel, but most decent hotels should have it now.

I stayed at a holiday inn in Jamaica - montego bay and they had 15$ a night, or some bogus crap then 30 for 3 nights.

but they had an unlocked wireless to all rooms, LLOL?? so I used that through the whole trip.

the people at the front desk had no idea they had it, some didnt know what it was.

I've actually found it to be the opposite.

I'm currently at a Hilton... nice hotel... $150/night for the room, $9.95/day for internet

I stayed at a Hampton Inn a while back... $69/night for the room, Free internet.

I'd be willing to pay $9.95 for 24 total hours of usage, or to be able to use it for the entire stay. But to pay $9.95 and only get 3-4 hours of usage out of it seems a little over the top for me.

I stayed at 3 different Holiday Inns in Socal in december. They all had free wired and wireless internet!

It's either a really cheap place, or a really nice place where they know people won't even care if they have to pay $ for internet.

As was mentioned before, most business-class hotels will charge for it because the people who stay there are generally on expense accounts and the company will pay for their internet access.

I've been staying at a Comfort Inn, A private 12 room Inn, and a Holiday Inn, all in the vacinity of Mt. Kisco NY for over the half of this year so far, and in each one was free, "Wired" interweb service...............The Holiday Inn has the sketchiest of the three, takes a while to get into it, not real fast, but it works and is free...... I would think a majority of the hotels, domestic anyway, are on the same page...

My experiences have been the same as yours with expensive places charging for it. I stayed at the JW Marriot in Miami which I think is 300/nt for a normal night's stay and it was 9.95. My thoughts on the matter were that they do it because they can. You are a captive audience and the temptation is high and you can probably afford the convenience.

A hotel charges $20 for a freaking package of mini-bar peanuts and you think $9.95 for internet is out of line?

well i work at a pretty big marriott, a full service, and the thing is, people come to full service hotels because of the service they get, not the prices. courtyards and other brand hotels have to use "gimicks" to get people there. also most travelers at my hotel are business so price isnt really an issue. and lastly its an outside company that installs and maintains the networks, we get a small percentage of the money but they more or less control the prices. the cheapest you can get it in a conference room is $175. people pay for it, so they charge it
