tacky? certainly. poor taste? possibly. should it be allowable by law? of course, just like some bullshit religious institution nearby.

i have never felt the need to trumpet my conformity or false empathy with candlelight vigils, ribbons of any color, memorial t-shirts, keychains or any other bullshit. mourning is to be done privately by those close to the deceased, not with bumper stickers and commemorative velvet paintings while supplies last.

There is tacky. And then, there is tacky. I present the fat man pin from the National Museum of Nuclear History.

Just the thing to wear as a lapel pin the next time you get invited to your local Japanese Embassy or Consulate.

There was a little shop inside the memorial museum in Hiroshima. Looked like it was mostly books, but there were some other things I didn't take a closer look at.

Anyway, this stuff doesn't bother me. It doesn't change what happened, and we're supposed to "never forget"... so I don't see what the issue is.

you would think after the news of someone climbing the new world trade tower they would spend the money on better security instead of wasting it on memorials and gift shops

The One World Trade Center and the memorial will/is a tourist attraction now.

In order to get into the memorial, I think we had to either walk through the gift shop or maybe it was when we had to exit. Don't entirely remember, but this was a couple months ago so it might be different now.

You had to go through security before because it was effectively an active construction site. The memorial is free, it is no longer fenced off, and is open during the hours the museum is open (so you can enter from all sides at this point). However, the museum charges admission.

As comedian Jim Norton said on Twitter yesterday.
"There is a GIFT SHOP at the 9-11 museum? And they charge admission. It's a mass grave you [long string of profanity, censored for T_Yamamoto's virgin ears]. What a disgrace."

and

"I don't care where the 'proceeds' go. Our gov't should sustain it. Give a billion less to a country that already hates us and use that money"

Which pretty much sums up my attitude on the whole situation.

Somebody brought up the Titanic earlier. Actually, a lot of serious Titanic buffs as well as families of the victims are strongly against the profiting off the tragedy. Bringing artifacts up from the wreck has long been controversial. Let alone the tours, travelling shows, and tacky souvenirs.

My first reaction is tacky ... and although time heals to me it still feels like yesterday.
