Gift shop? Ok! Muslim temple down the street? Burn it down! Omg!

Seriously, who gives a crap. This isn't sacred ground. Let them build whatever they want there.

I assume the profit goes towards keeping it open. I can easily see how relatives would find it tacky and offensive but at the end of the day, it has to be paid for somehow.

Granted congress could buy 1 less jet or one less fruit fly study.

A Gift Shop to our corporatism society is just as acceptable as a chapel in a religious society.

What better way to flip the bird to the terrorists than to turn their greatest triumph into a capitalist venture.

It comes down to how it's handled. Bad...foam twin towers hats (like the Statue of Liberty hats). Good...Arlington National Cemetery has a book store and I'm guessing they sell small non-book items. And let's hope the money goes towards an appropriate cause.

Really pathetic. Are they going to keep it open forever? Where's the pearl harbor gift shop? I want a kamakazi pilot figurine.

Meh, at some point in the semi-near future September 11th will no longer be "my god... september 11th" and it'll just be "well what do you know, it is september 11th, huh?". It was going to happen eventually.

Kind of like Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Gettysburg and Kent State and a hundred other tragedies and memories dulled by time.

Hard to say. They have a gift ship near the USS Arizona memorial and there are over 1,000 men still entombed on it.

It's a tourist trap. That wasn't built for NYCers at all.

I would think that tourists would be pissed if they couldn't get a 9-11 t-shirt or key chain when they visited Ground Zero.

Hell... there have been street vendors selling flag pins and whatnot around there since 2002.

It's a gift shop, so it's tacky and pointless by default. But you know what's really tacky and immature? Not being able to get over it and move on thirteen years later.

Exactly this. From what I saw of the online catalog, it seems tasteful- FDNY shirts, books, etc. If it was tacky touristy garbage, I might be a bit miffed. Plus, the museum is funded by the shop and private donations. Unfortunately, it costs a lot to keep something like this operational.

Not seeing a big issue...

I remember those twin-tower coins available for years on TV relatively soon after it happened -- they're built from real silver recovered from the WTC vault. There's obviously demand for stuff like this.
