I know I can answer all 45 of those questions, but tbh, I'm not surprised. This sort of knowledge was necessary to be a productive citizen and considering most people went up to 6th grade level of education, 8th grade would be more advanced.

How do you even calculate this? This was before the days of the calculator, so whatever is done must be done manually.

I saw very similar questions - on the New York State department of education archives. They have state exams that go all the way back to the 1860's (maybe earlier, I can't remember the oldest one I went through.)

Edit - the Snopes article only points out why that test doesn't indicate a decline in education. It doesn't say that it wasn't an actual test.
