Well, the dumb-ing down of ATOT continues unabated. That's pure bullshit, yet you can always find somebody dim enough to believe it.

I know I can answer all 45 of those questions, but tbh, I'm not surprised. This sort of knowledge was necessary to be a productive citizen and considering most people went up to 6th grade level of education, 8th grade would be more advanced. :p

You mean "dumb" enough? :p

Yeah, I'm gullible and admit it.

Anyone else think that exam isn't that hard? In 8th grade it might have required some studying, but seriously...

I would probably fail some(most) of the grammar parts because I always hated english, but I'm pretty sure the rest is fairly simple.

"Find the interest of $512.60 for 8 months and 18 days at 7 percent"
Assuming a month is 30 days, this would be a period of 258 days, so:
512.6 * 0.07^(258/365)

How do you even calculate this? This was before the days of the calculator, so whatever is done must be done manually.

I saw very similar questions - on the New York State department of education archives. They have state exams that go all the way back to the 1860's (maybe earlier, I can't remember the oldest one I went through.)

Edit - the Snopes article only points out why that test doesn't indicate a decline in education. It doesn't say that it wasn't an actual test.
