8800gtx preview

I just hope R600 will keep the power consumption down on load as well. Maybe AMD can add its Cool and quite technology.

Half Life 2: Lost Coast loves the GeForce 8800GTX. Here the GeForce 8800GTX is able to show significant performance gains over AMD?s ATI Radeon X1950 XTX?approximately 92%.

Quake 4 shows similar gains as Half Life 2: Lost Coast too, an approximate 92% improvement.

Prey is based on the same game engine as Quake 4. However, Prey shows smaller performance differences between the GeForce 8800GTX and ATI Radeon X1950 XTX, albeit its still 60%.

nice...

Now I'm really impressed. Power consumption seems to be under control and performance per watt is certainly no worse than than an X1950XTX. Can't wait to get one🙂

Only issue now seems length of the card... I wonder how they overclock?

Now all we have left to see is how the GTS fares up and how much it actually goes for when its out.

LOL thats clever 🙂

but isnt ati's 2D/3D about the same in video card terms.

there any new information from the new offerings of ati? i love having the the latest crap, but if ati's card is theoretically going to be better and come out in another month or two, i'd rather wait. i did that crap with the x1900xtx and got the 7950gx2 right after.

Hmm that's a lot higher than the 30% performance increase that was reported earlier...

Sounds like drivers are maturing for this card.

Also sounds like the price to performance will be better than the ATI card too.

In case nobody noticed, the rumored power consumption specs always turn out to be blown out of proportion compared to the actual power consumption. It's good to see the g80 not using ridiculuusly a lot of power, even my 430 watt psu would easily handle it.

I agree, but why the dual 6-pin molex plugs if it only draws 4% more juice than an X1950XT?

Latest rumor has R600 coming out the last week of January.

Sigh, this kind of comment is why I posted on DailyTech to change the wording. It's a 4% change from system to system! For all we know, the cards themselves are say 100W compared to 120W, which is then a 20% increase rather than what you would've seen under just system pull. Unfortunately, grabbing pure video card wattage is a bit harder than just system watts.

ack! where'd you see that at?

i'm so torn. it's not like there's going to be many games taking advantage of dx10 immediately so i COULD wait.

they better have a damn good card coming out to be 2 months behind nvidia!

It's still too far out to pin down R600 - ATI's roadmap says Q1. You can always sell your 8800 before the release of R600 to minimize depreciation - until that happens, the 8800s should hold their value fairly well. I'm more interested in the GTS benchmarks and whether or not it will suffer a performance drop proportional to its shader and memory bandwidth deficiencies. I'm hoping it's at least within 20% of the GTX.

I read somewhere that the second one is optional, like on the 6800u. I just cant remember where I saw it...

But even so, with a quad core cpu and the g80 drawing ~350 watts at load for the whole system is not too bad at all.

*edited for the grammer polise 😉

Looks awesome.
I'll be buying one of these babies on release.

Especially considering I've already sold my 7950 GX2 on eBay 😛

Maybe its just me, but that benchmark for HL2 looks a little low on the AMD-ATi side. I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure I get better than 80FPS @ the same settings. oh well, even the best make mistakes .

I hope we see some reviews of these cards with some lower end?(X2 or 6300) CPU's to see if it's worth buying a G80 card if you don't have a Quad Core or X6800 monster CPU driving the card. It would be interesting to see how these scale with different CPU's.....

Here is where I saw the rumor. Scroll down to post #2282. The other guys seem to respect CJ so I figured the rumor must be at least as credible as the others we've heard.

well, they giving the 'best case' games right now based on 2 engines. 😉

and i really believe the 30% was WAY underreported ... and said so way back when....
it's a nice card
