how long can this card be considered a mid range card and probably when i'll become obsolete ?

just asking....
 
If the 4830 is going to be as good as it is, we could see some competitive drops in the 9800gt. If that is the case, the 8800gt could take place of the 9600gt. Not sure though.
 
hopefully until well into 2009...I just bought 2 9800GT's to SLI. I want to wait until the refresh of the GTX series comes out which shouldn't be until Christmas at the earliest.
 
It's barely mid range now being around 100 bucks and the 60-80 dollar 9600gt close to it in performance.

Probably won't be obsolete for a while, but in terms of range, which should be based on price and available performance, its low-mid end already.

 
yes. my thoughts exactly i'm just gonna use this till some dust settles on the whole scene. it's like a stormy sea of prices u buy a card today 2 weeks later the card is cheaper and there's a much better card in it's place, tis a frustrating melee....
 
How many times do we gotta say it. The 9800GT is just a rebadged 8800GT with slightly faster clocks and runs cooler. If you have two 8800GTs in SLI mode you're gonna be fine for a coupla years as it beats a GeForce GTX 280 in most instances.

The 8800GT is way faster than a 9600GT.🙂

Um...no. The 8800GT is maybe 10% faster than the 9600GT (I've had both and there are only perceptible differences if you go above 16x12).

This is the part I don't get...the 8800GT has 112 Stream Processor and the 9600GT only has 64 but yet performs that closely? They are so close in price I don't know why anyone would go for a 9600GT.

It's not that close. When I looked around, even the super overclocked 9600GT only hit about 65-70% at best of the un-overclocked 8800GT in the games that mattered to me (UT3, COD4).

Yeah, at 1920x1200, a 9600GT is way out of it's league. They're 85-90% as fast as the 8800GT, though, at 1280x1024, no AA. The higher the res., though, the more the 9600GT falls behind.

OK I was confusing the 9600GT with the 9600GSO. The GT seems to be 10% slower than the 8800GT/9800GT, but the GSO is more like 25-30% slower.

I wonder if maybe I made the same mistake?? Oh, you know what, I'm almost positive I was thinking of the 8800GT vs. the 8800GS. At lower resolution, there wasn't alot of difference, but the higher the res., the worse the 8800GS did, comparatively.

Looks to be a decent upgrade over my 7800 GTX right?

PS. What's the difference between the GTS in the 1st and 4th columns?

the 9800gt doesnt have faster clocks and it doesnt run cooler than the 8800gt...

 
I recently picked up this 8800GT and the little slugger scored over 13000 in 3dmark06 and runs crysis fairly well with very high settings at 1280X1024. I think it's here to stay for awhile.

My bad, Toyota. You're right. The 9800GT is exactly the same as the 8800GT BUT it does, from what I've read on review sites, operate a little cooler than an 8800GT.🙂

 
How long will it last? Until you feel like you can't play and the graphic quality isn't good enough.

it wont run any cooler on average if they are each using the same cooling solutions.

 
reading this thread makes me feel a bit sad that i paid $230 for an 8800Gt back in 12/07 (right before the holidays). 10 months later, i don't even know what the hell is going on with the graphics card market; seems like there were 2 or even 3 cycles of new cards already.

well, considering that the 9600gso has been available twice recently for under $40 AR....

you read wrong. a 9800gt and 8800gt can both do physics. they are the same cards and the only difference is that hybrid power is optional on the 9800gt but not available on the 8800gt.
