So since it varies between 57 and 65 you can still just ~ gametime.maxvariablefps 50 or 55 (or whatever gives you the smoothness you desire) and play very smoothly...

How many fps can the 860k or fx6300 manage?

Sure, cause if you are going to buy a $1100 vga you gonna pair it with an 6300 or i3...
And what, a whopping 7 fps difference for low fps between the two of them?

From your link,so you will need at least an GTX970 to not bottleneck an i3 ,how is that bad?
Core i7 4790K, Ultra Settings, No HairWorks 1080p Low/Avg FPS 1440p Low/Avg FPS

Just started reading but I thought this thread was G3258 vs FX6300 or 860k? Why are you switching to i3?

Hi, i3-4370 owner here.

To say you need a quad core minimum is bad advice. That suggests that an Athlon 5350 is better than my i3 because of core count. It's better to say four threads to include i3s and because all two threaded CPUs perform poorly in newer games.

The fact that the i3 (the slowest mainstream version at that) isn't doing very well in all titles is expected. That's what makes it a budget CPU. Also, people with i3s aren't going to be using TItan Xs either.

Just keep things in perspective.

The point is regardless of GPUs dual cores will dip. Heavily.

The overclocked pentium in the article linked above gets a *minimum* of 27 fps, while the PS4 seems locked at 30. So I dont see how that can be called "dipping heavily". I am playing the game with an i5 and a HD7770, and I get less than 30 fps *average* on low settings, and the game *is* playable. And certainly an i3 is even better.

Now I am not advocating a Pentium, or even an i3 for that matter. But I agree with Critical who said we need to keep things in perspective. This game seems to me to be quite playable on even a Pentium as are most current games with a few exceptions like GTA V. Is it ideal, no. But I dont consider upper 20s mimimum and 40s average unplayable at all. To call a dual core, especially a hyperthreaded one, rubbish is a bit of an overstatement. In fact in many games, an i3 will be faster than an FX.

yes, I would think using the 30FPS lock (most people should) the g3258 is not going to feel like a big limitation for witcher 3 most of the time, for what it is, a cheap CPU, that's quite OK... also you can lower the CPU dependency with settings like the background characters;

but if price and the platform was no concern I would choose the 6300

PS4 drops to 20FPS in many places and the settings that closely match it on the PC are:

V-Sync: On
Resolution: 1920x1080
Nvidia Hairworks: Off
Number of Background Characters: Low (console actually seems lower than this)
Shadow Quality: Medium
Terrain Quality: Medium
Water Quality: High
Grass Density: Medium
Texture Quality: Ultra
Foliage Visibility Range: Medium
Detail Level: Medium
Ambient Occlusion: SSAO
All post effects on except vignetting

according to Digital Foundry.

And I do. If I don't game at 50FPS+ consistently its upgrade time. Low settings and sub 30 is just as poor as substandard "next-gen" consoles. Its dipping heavily because in the wilds you get over 50 and as soon as NPCs and AI is pumped up FPS die.

30FPS lock and adjusting settings is great for that.

And guys don't forget this "We use one computer independently, with virtualization"
if use 2 core cpu , every one use 1 core( 4 and than 2core/person , if use 6 core 3/person). It is important for me, or who want to use like me.
