8600gts DVI to HDMI HDTV driving me mad.

OK, so I have a problem.

Previously I used a VGA to get video off of my pc onto my TV [1 of two monitors], but the higher resolutions wern't supported.

So I buy a DVI to HDMI cable and plug it in. I get picture coming through, and I can push the resolution right up but I get green dots flashing on the screen, and then the moment anything is displayed on the screen [windows taskbar, a window] I get thick green columns flashing all over the screen. The second monitor is fine.

I have the latest drivers from nvidia, I'm guessing all I have to do is go into "manage custom resolutions" and adjust the settings correctly, but I don't know what I'm doing. Or maybe I'm wrong, please help!

I have a sony kdl-40w2000 pdf and a EVGA nvidia 8600gts 512mb.

The TV can take 1080 [i?] and the refresh rates listed for the VGA [page 41] are 60, 70 and 75. Don't know about HDMI. 50 and 60ish are green, 70 dosen't work.

Please help guys and gals.

Thanks in advance.

*EDITS*

Tried multiple resolutions and some different refresh rates. The green evilness [what is this called? Glyphing?] changes slightly, but no improvement.

All the resolutions listed [8ish, from reallty small to bigger than 1080]. No changes.

50, 59, 60, 61, 70. 70 dosen't work at all. All the rest are pretty much the same.

With the VGA It goes to 60 as standard but the screen flickers a tiny bit. I have set it to 70 and it works perfectly.

found this bit of info on a UK site
"The KDL40W2000 *DOES* accept a 1080p signal over VGA, HOWEVER when it identifies itself over the VGA connection it does not specify this mode as being available, additionally it claims the mode is unsupported in a little message to the bottom right of the screen... which is CLEARLY nonsense because two clicks of the select button and it goes away leaving the Xbox360 picture in all its 1080p glory running perfectly well with what I will assume is 1:1 pixel mapping."

and from sony "1920x1080 resolution LCD panel" and "Supports 1080p signals"

if you're going through the HDMI ports, there's problem one, there's a standard vga port for the pc, shows it right in the manual.
I do not think the video card and tv will sync if you try hooking it up through the HDMI port.

it's on page 38 of the manual you linked for the tv.

The VGA works fine at 1360 by 768 or lower, but anything higher and I get the "unsoported signal, adjust your PC output". Pressing select twice, or changing Av's and changing back dosen't work.

Numbers are what the graphics card will do. *'s are what the options given to me for VGA for the TV.

okay, in the manual the pc port maxes out at the 1360 768 setting, and from what I can see, the HDMI port on the tv is not liking pc inputs, some reports are of the tv smoking and some time the video card fries, so I'd be happy it can output any pc input at all.

So no quick fixes huh? I was hoping someone would say "Change refresh rate to X and you should be fine."

The graphics card does see the HDTV and have specific settings for it.

So it'll do for now, but what are the options for the future? If I was to buy a graphics card with a HDMI out would I beable to get the higher resolutions, or not?

I see, and like the other owners are saying it's the tv not the video at fault.

"Last up on the connectivity flying circus, it's time for the analogue PC input, also commonly referred to as the "VGA input" (although it's capable of far higher resolutions than the VGA standard). This is a funny one, because Sony officially only supports a resolution of up to 1360x768 through this input. I found the results of this to still give fantastic results for games, but previous users have discovered that it's actually possible to go all the way up to full 1920x1080 by using the Windows program Powerstrip. This is actually a bit of a pain to get working, but I did manage eventually and can confirm that 1080p over the PC input is possible on the 40W (I need to buy a better quality cable to avoid ringing, however). Users have reported the Xbox 360's VGA cable can actually send 1080p to this TV straight out of the box, which is excellent news.

Whilst using 1080p over VGA, the TV will at first notify you that you're using an Unsupported resolution, but a quick double-press of the Menu or Info buttons will clear this Warning (this becomes instinctive after a while). For resolutions that are either not of the same aspect ratio as the widescreen panel, or not of the same number of pixels - in other words, most of them - the PC input will give you 3 display options. The first lets you see the pixels 1:1 mapped without any scaling, which means on low resolutions you'll see a large border around a small picture area. The second option scales to fit the panel, but preserves the aspect ratio (this is what I use to play 4:3 Sega Dreamcast games at 640x480). The final option scales to fit every available pixel and distorts the aspect ratio (ew). It also lets you adjust the Backlight, unlike some other LCD TVs. Brightness, Contrast and Colour Temperature are also adjustable. The other picture options are predictably greyed-out for this input due to minimal video processing."

you can try it, but like they state it's a pain to get it to accept higher resolutions and you'll have to keepusing powerstrip and adjusting the tv if you switch between pc and tv.

Hmm, I can only get 1600x1200, and it's stuck stretched, so isn't worth using. There arn't that many options I can see to play with, but I'll have another go.

I'm assuming that the people who say "Press select twice" were using earlier firmware because it dosen't work for me. Or it's my graphics card being silly.

All insight/suggestions welcome.

the tv will not? let you switch between the 3 options? I'm wondering if yours is a earlier version of the one the mentioned in the article.

Mine is less than a year old, the model has been around since 06, so I'm guessing the one in the article is older.

Call sony and ask them to roll it back?

no. it'd involve, if they'll do it, shipping the tv back to sony and wait for them to do it.
what options does it give you on the tv for scaling?

normal, full 1, full 2

normal =1 to 1
full 1 = scales it up
full 2 = scales it up and stretches to fit.
