ive read storys of people suing because they never read the manual and got injured.
even if its not alot of money to u, if your pensioners are anything like our pensioners then ill bet a couple of hundred is alot of money

Oh no, the car is going to need some work. I figure roughly $5-6k worth at least. But hell, even a tiny fender bender like this one that happened to me pic cost over $2k in total damages (they had to replace and repaint to match both the entire quarterpanel and rear bumper cover).
From what I can see, you're looking at replacing the hood, left fender, front bumper and grill, left headlight assembly, left front wheel (and possibly tire), and all the left front suspension components, plus suspension re-alignment. From the pics, the frame looks straight, but there might be concern if the left front strut top mount was damaged.
IMO, the officer ruled out the ice for the sole reason that his doing so would prevent you from being able to sue the car wash. So no, I won't retract.
what i am most ashamed of is that this compensation crap is filter through over here, there are TV ads on every channle (bar the good old BBC) for personal injury lawyers....thankfully there hasnt been any stupid cases like sueing macdonalds for getting fat, or sueing winnebego (spelt?) for not stating in the manual that cruise control doesnt control the viechle.
though we are at the stage where a accident at work is likely to be followed by a compensation claim

Some think any inconvinance or even slight pain is justified pain and suffering. Some think trama and long lasting effects warrants it. The law is written on Lucky's side right now in USA so you better stay away.
If that didn't seem odd enough to make you want to slow down to avoid an accident, you shouldn't be driving at all. From what I can see, both cars made contact on front corners. If he were a split second earlier, it would have meant you T-boning his car. It is evident the eldery gentleman did not stop, but from the pictures it looks like you were not fully aware of the situation. Were you not being an attentive driver?

All he bent was an A-arm. Those things are cheap asre aluminum, not made for lateral forces like a car hitting you sideways. Sure maybe it is 5 grand with inflated proprietary car part prices, but he sure as hell did'nt bend frame/unibody as the hood is good and damage is'nt in far enough.

is there a state where this doesnt happen? i dont wanna stay in the Uk and id rather not go to OZ but i dont wanna go to the US if im gonna get sued for backing out my drive, if i just cycle or get the bus everywhere ill be ok right?

Really? I would disaggree with that w/o some proof. Our family biz has a lawyer on retainer year round, two actually ones tax guy. I'm 33 and have been sued 2x and sued others. The fisrt time I was sued I was only 20. We have 4 million lawyers in USA, more than any other country by a huge margin for a reason. Conflict resolution is done with lawyers and suits.

The corner he was rounding started out in a direction that would have allowed him to see the old man bombing up to the stop sign.
no i dont, i do know your allowed to own a gun, and there are alot of shootings in the US, more than here or in europe. it is pretty easy to come to my conclusion when all we get fed over here is news about gun shootings and daft lawsuits that originate from the US, all i see is shootings and lawsuits, with no proof to suggest otherwise

The accident happened on private property, a mall access road. Old man was to either turn right to pull up to the four way stop or turn left to continue on the street. He took neither and went straight at 20mph. Idiot.
