Edit: Oh,they weren't my favorite but at many of the parties I went to back then always seem to have them playing. I wasn't much of a punk rock fan myself...They were one strange group though

The Chameleons (UK)

Absolutely essential 80s band (though they have since regrouped). They are in the same vein as U2 and Echo & The Bunnymen but they definitely stand on their own. They're the kind of band where you either have all of their albums (about 12-15 counting official live albums) or none at all. Just f'ing amazing songwriting, musical interplay and passion.

The Comsat Angels. You must own their output too. Waiting For A Miracle, Sleep No More, Fiction represent their trifecta (unfortunately it's hard to find these albums on CD, most are bootlegged). Atmospheric Joy Division-ish sound, sometimes beautiful, regularly menacing, very addicting.

Talk Talk

OMG, you people keep omitting all these great bands! Talk Talk had a musical growth progression quite like the Beatles. Simple/popish at first, and then more amazing with each successive album. Start with "Colour Of Spring", a near optimal balance between their popish and complex, introspectives sides. I think "Spirit Of Eden" is one of the most important albums of the past 30 years...a maelstorm of emotions. Incredible, must own.

Gene Loves Jezebel
Icicle Works
China Crisis

The '80s was the best decade for music... It's a shame that those of you who have grown up force-fed on a diet of 50 Cent and Avril Lavigne cannot ever fully appreciate this.

You suck. The Cure is basically one of the best bands EVER.

And WTF? Why are the Cars not on the list yet? Or the B-52s?

Oh he's so depressed.. he wears all black and sings about sad things. Oh wait, HE MAKES MILLIONS BY BEING A MUSICIAN. And I love how he goes on MTV, the biggest trend-setter, and does some stupid commercial about how everyone should stop wearing designer clothes and following trends.

He is one people I hate most in music.
