8000 series is a bust, should I skip out?

I currently have a 3570k, and hd 7870 and I was going to get the 8970 around august because most people thought the 8000 series was going to be epic or something, but since it will just be the same cards should I just get another 7870? go with a gtx 670? or still get the 8970? I'm aware that the hd 7870 is a monster in crossfire so would that be the best bang for my buck? by august I will be gaming on 2560x 1440 and I will probably have an 800 watt psu
 
They're using 8000 numbering for OEM parts, and those will actually be 7xxx parts underneath it all. OP, do you lack the ability to distinguish between model numbers? They'll have an actual next generation product too, a successor to 7xxx series. It looks like it just won't be called 8xxx. It's kind of like when Nvidia skipped 3xx with Geforce, and used that particular series for OEM.

I'd personally wait and see what each company offers, that's what I'm going to do anyway. I don't care about brand.

Yes, they will release the exact same cards to the retail market under a different number scheme and expect no one to notice anything 🙄

Wait wat?!

NONE of your options make any sense whatsoever.

August is MONTHS off. Literally 7 of them. 8970 is an OEM rebrand. No one knows anything about the next gen cards from either company. (although NV mongs will tell you that the next gen NV card will be a desktop Tesla GK110 or whatever it is, the high end card NV had last year that they didn't release because, err, they didn;t want to. Or something. Seriously. That's what the say. Sounds ludicrous no?)

In the real world however, we do not have any actual information about any of the next gen cards so come back in a few months (well within your timescale) and read the reviews of the next gen cards of each company and decide which is best for you.

i think some of you guys are confused, and its totally understandable. The OEM versions are named 8000 and yes they are re-badged 7xxx parts, but it seems like the desktop retail ones might ALSO be numbered 8000 (with HD added) and be their new line of next gen cards. Really lame and confusing on AMDs part but they figure OEM customers are'nt gonna care or even notice.

It's like how they currently name mobile/laptop graphics card with the 7xxx branding but they do NOT perform the same. They still bear the same name nonetheless.

so we have OEM 8000s, Mobile 8000s, and desktop retail 8000s, but despite sharing the same name they may all be different cards!! brilliant!

Luckily, most of us here on Anandtech VC&G can tell the potential difference between a model number that includes "HD", and one that doesn't 😎
 
I'm anxiously awaiting the next gen cards as a single 7970 still isn't quite enough, and I don't really feel like doing multi-GPU.

ahhhh thank you, i thought they were the same cards with different clock speeds or something lol, thanks for clearing that up instead of making fun of me
