Pick at the O.P. and play apologist, but a top-to-bottom rebrand for OEMs is stupid, confusing and unnecessary.

But still no one is answering the OP's original question which had nothing to do with what this thread turned into.

OP, Quote from raghu on another forum:

OP a HD 7870 is faster than GTX 660 and slower than GTX 660 Ti. the HD 7870 Tahiti LE competes with GTX 660 Ti. at 1200 mhz the HD 7870 tahiti LE matches HD 7970 (925 Mhz)

the sapphire HD 7870 XT is not in stock right now. but you could grab that when its available.

the PCS+ MYST HD 7870 tahiti LE cooler is not as good as the sapphire card which comes with the excellent dual x cooler. the PCS+ card gets loud with overclocking

here is a user who compares the club3d hd 7870 (tahiti le) overclocked with HD 7970

if you can stretch your budget the HD 7950 for 290 bucks after rebate is a very good card . comes with 3 free games.

i think some of you guys are confused, and its totally understandable. The OEM versions are named 8000 and yes they are re-badged 7xxx parts, but it seems like the desktop retail ones might ALSO be numbered 8000 (with HD added) and be their new line of next gen cards. Really lame and confusing on AMDs part but they figure OEM customers are'nt gonna care or even notice.

It's like how they currently name mobile/laptop graphics card with the 7xxx branding but they do NOT perform the same. They still bear the same name nonetheless.

so we have OEM 8000s, Mobile 8000s, and desktop retail 8000s, but despite sharing the same name they may all be different cards!! brilliant!

Well this opinion is wrong since the new OEM parts already carry the "HD" tag.

I'm more in line with the people who are of opinion the next line up will skip a number and go straight to 9xxx or even a whole new name.

We'll see.

Yeah the low end is getting the GCN touch since low end HD 7xxx mobile where actually still VLIW4 parts.

So HD 8xxx series from top to bottom for OEM will now be GCN based, but I do recall someone mentioning HD 5770 (Juniper) is making a cameo again.

I've also read rumors on forums that AMD is going back to the ATI name in the future, so a new naming scheme wouldn't surprise me.

Nobody knows for sure what is happening until we have official news.

The mobile GPU in my old laptop was a Mobility Radeon 9200, which was actually a mobile variant of the Desktop Radeon 8500 (DirectX 8.1 era part). The fact that they had already re-used the 9xxx branding at that time didn't stop them from introducing the 9700 pro and later the 9800 pro, two of their most successful videocards ever.

I am really looking forward to picking up the 9800Pro again. Giving my last one to a friend's son was the biggest mistake I ever made as performance hasn't changed or improved at all since then. You have to give AMD credit for getting the most out of old inventory! o_O

oh wait no it's not... why don't we wait and see physical cards before we waste our time speculating?
