I saw it when it first came out with the wife.

Although we both voted against Prop 8, I would recommend that you skip this movie. It has to be one of the worst "documentaries" I have ever watched.

Would you mind if I add this link in my post about how America protects people like them who seek to harm Americas other citizens

The Church also has to have enemies and they create false ones to keep their base riled up .. They have done incredible harm to gays/homosexuals/HIV research etc...

Look back and see what they called people who acquired aids?
Can you imagine how much it hurts to be constantly told you are not good enough and that you are pure trash and the devil spawn type shit etc

And they spent the money in a state they don't even reside in.. THAT IS WAR to me... Incredibly disgusting... meddle in the affairs of other states because of the fucking spaghetti monster? how much more fucking pathetic can it get... Jesus would kill them all himself

I've seen parts (as much as I can stomach at one time) and it's complete hogwash. Required viewing my butt.

Hmmm ... what was so bad about it? Where did they go astray? (genuinely curious. not trying to start a fight).

I have many LDS friends (well more aquaintances and such), and I often play basketball at their church (8 years now)... I plan on trying to bring this up to some of them to get their insight, but I'm, afraid of what I may hear, and in turn what I might say.

Nobody wants to think LDS spent over 20 MILLION dollars to stop humans from creating a union of love while there are homeless and starving and battered people/children/wives living in their own state IF THEY REALLY DIDN'T DO THAT

^^ know wut im sayn?

Where did they go astray? Did you watch the movie?

There were a lot of factors involved with Prop 8 getting passed - the movie completely glosses over most of them.

Again, what was "hogwash" What was fabricated/lied about in it? (curiosity, not instigation)

It starts off on a stupid premise ("either you're on the side of liberalism or you're one of the evil ones") and goes downhill from their. Complete tripe.

I think I clearly stated I watched the movie didn't I? Why so condescending right out of the gate? I'm trying to get information...

I realize that there were "lots of factors involved" , but on the same note, I would imagine that the $32M and countless man hours the LDS provided (I think there was a stat along the lines of 2% of CA is LDS, and over 71% of the donations came from LDS) helped, if not completely tipped the scales of the vote.

So you believe that the people of California were duped into voting for Prop 8 by the LDS?

I believe with that much cash you can really stir shit up and they knew that.

Are you going to tell us they spent that cash just for a tax write-off?

What is their fear..

You don't think that countless commercials, speaches, flyers, demonstrations etc affect people and their decisions?

Mormons as a religious organization are a fairly small church group compared to other religious groups in the world. Maybe you are lucky to have 1% or 2% of the population. Dont gays and athiests have plenty of money also? The LDS Church never endorses any political groups. This is a well-known fact. I have heard this repeatedly in church and from the General Authorities during General Conference. General Conference is an internationally televised broadcast meeting held semi-annually. So this is just a few Mormons with similar leanings that choose to support some issue. Mormons have been persecuted repeatedly in many states so we have an absolute rule that we do not endorse candidates. However, individuals are free to be involved in plitics just like you are. You see the catholic church and other churches endorsing candidates and telling their members not to vote for politicans involved in abortion all the time. Mormons refuse to officially endorse any politicians or tell their members how they should vote. You need to know what you are talking about.

They are tax exempt :)
Not to mention I think they only claimed like $200K on their taxes for this.

Mitt Romney?

In the movie they have the specific speaches... those CCTV ones that LDS have at their Stakes... where the President and Prophets specifically speak out about Prop 8 and how they are to fight against same-sex marriage. As far as I understand, such speeches are broadcast to all Stakes, globally correct?

If you look at the demographics of who voted for Prop 8, I would say it had very little affect.

I remember walking through my neighborhood at the time of the election, and noting the houses with Yes on Prop 8, and those with No on Prop 8. Most of the Yes on Prop 8 houses were ESLers, if you get my drift.

Damn it anyway, I came into this thread thinking it was about the Mormon Position. Like some kind of kinky twist on Missionary Position.

I am thoroughly disappointed with P&N right now.

Catholics! ;)

For the most part, that is probably correct in my neighborhood.

Serious question for those that believe that the LDS is responsible for Prop 8 passing. Did the LDS fund the Arizona and Florida initiatives banning gay marriage?

heh

Just to be clear on this. The Church never endorses any political groups.
But it's ok for large groups of church members to get together and endorse political groups.
And individual members of the church can do the same.

No, they didn't endorse any political group. They simply pushed a proposition that agreed with their belief system, and apparently the majority of people in CA agreed with them. Then the whiners came out in droves. A proposition is not the same as a candidate or group.
