Address the problem instead of waging war on the symptoms.

Email Derek Wilson and Anand. That's what I've done.

This thread has spawned a number of issues with regards to the forum guidelines. Too many members who should have known better have violated various rules. Time for a refresher course:

1. Personal insults. If a Mod not involved in this thread had seen it devolve into personal insults crossing (or coming close to) the line, we would have stepped in and warned the offenders to back off or get sanctioned. Unfortunately, we cannot be all places all the time and this thread spiraled out of control. IMO, this helped lead to the additional problems below.

2. Mod Callouts. Again, when Moderators are posting as members they are to be treated as members. When members are involved in heated exchanges, even those crossing the line with personal insults, Mod callouts are still prohibited. The fact that someone breaks a rule does NOT allow others to break rules too. If someone feels another member, whether a Mod or regular member, is breaking the rules the appropriate response is to PM the Anandtech Moderator account or post in PFI. (If the complaint is about a specific Mod, in his or her capacity as a Mod, do NOT post in PFI as that will be seen as a Mod callout)

3. Moderators breaking the rules. Mods are people and thus fallible. When Mods are posting as members, they are subject to the same rules as other members.

4. Commenting on forum moderation in P&N. This is against the rules; here again the appropriate manner to raise questions about forum moderation is to PM the Anandtech Moderator account or post in PFI (again, if it is a general question and not about a specific Mod. If it is about a specific Mod, please PM the Mod account or Derek Wilson).

I believe this situation illustrates how important it is to understand and follow the rules about lodging complaints, whether it be about a member's conduct or moderation. Please keep these in mind.
