I will be buying a new system soon im lookin at two cards 7900gt and 7950gt , i want to ask you guys that how a 7900GT(volt modded) overclocked on stock cooling will compete to 7950gt at stock settings ?

thanks in advance..

A highly overclocked 7900GT will beat a 7950GT. PERIOD

A 7900GTO is a much better deal though, and none of these compares to the 1900XT.

7950GT has twice the GDDR3 of a 7900GT, and when you're getting into this level of performance that extra 256mb will actually affect performance at higher resolutions.

7900GTO is similar to the 7950GT, but it's dual-slot. It's essentially a downclocked 7900GTX; OC it a bit, and it will be a GTX.

you don't want to v-mod a 7900gt on stock cooling, go with the 7900gto...better cooling, well priced, faster than a stock 7900gt, and no v-mod required.

edit: grammar

Go with the 7900GTO ... it should match the other two in performance even if it won't reach GTX clockspeeds, will run much cooler & you also won't need to void your warranty with physical modifications.

ORLY? My passive cooled XFX 7950GT runs @ 600/1600 (51C idle & 65C load temps) and outperforms the x1900xt in a majority of the benchmarks. My card is also silent, doesn't have heat problems, draws less power, comes w/ full HDCP support, and a double lifetime warranty. :)

7950GT (default clocks) vs. X1900XT

The EVGA 7900GTO is a great deal for sleeper GTX even though it comes with the frowned upon Sansung memory.

Don't get me wrong, the X1900XT is a nice card and has been available for quite some time, but not everyone is an ATI fanboi and fps aren't everything.

Not to give the impression that I agree with that idiot, but the article you linked to concludes that the X1900XT is the better value & most
of the benchmarks show it to also be faster, which agrees with all the other credible benchmarks I've seen.

Further, if you are comparing the overclocked results of the 7950GT, perhaps it would be better to compare them to an oveclocked X1900XT to get the full picture... also be sure to show minimum fps & set the Nvidia driver to HQ.

Nice overclock on that GT btw... what kind of temps do you get on the core under load?

If you noticed I added (default clocks) to the URL description to emphasize the fact it was a head-to-head comparison and to show how close the two cards are in terms of performance.

In regards to my 7950GT I listed the temps in my original post which are (51C idle & 65C load temps), and it's similar to the temps I saw on my EVGA 7900GT N584 (500/1500).

Then ATI wins hands down.

How so?

A 1900xt beats a 7900GTX at 650 and 1600. I would consider it a better performer than even a 7900GTX OC for IQ etc. A 7950GT at 600, 1600 won't come any where near a 1900xt.

I have a XFX 7900 GT ($220 shipped) with a Zalman VF-900 Cu cooler ($38 shipped) so that's $258 and it's clocked at 562/1612. I haven't put a 7950GT into my machine so I can't make a direct comparison between the two for game benchmarks.

However you can get 7950GTs (550/1400) for $280 shipped and I don't think that's a bad price considering the 512MB.

Who gives a flying F about heat problems and p-ower draw" Why do people act like this is a reason to buy a card? I have a 500w PSU with 34A on the 12v rail that I bought for $4.00 AR (and yes I got my rebate back within 4 weeks)

I hope all you power draw freaks are also under volting your 3800+ energy efficient CPU's in your rooms powered by your florescent light bulbs...

LOL at all this POWER draw bullsh!t

<sarcasm> Yea, I hear ya. Intel obviously didn't give a F about heat issues or power consumption when they were redesigning their processors. Prescotts ran cool and drew very little power. AMD also could care less about low wattage cpu's. Who cares about the electricity bill when your parents foot the bill each month. <sarcasm>

What does your 500w generic power supply have to do with anything? The only thing funny is your rediculous reply. :)

John, overall how do you like that xfx 7950? I've been leaning towards that card for the silent factor but I may wait until the new geforce cards come out next month to build my new conroe system.

The main reasons I sold my 7900GT and upgraded to this 7950GT:

[*]single slot card
[*]passive cooling and temps are nearly identical to an active cooled model (in my pc)
[*]slightly faster than my 7900GT
[*]HDCP so I can output High Def content over DVI to my projector & LCD TV

I really disliked the fan spinning up to a semi-noisy level on the 7900GT when I wasn't gaming and simply using Media Player or PowerDVD to watch videos. Some may frown at the $300 price tag for the XFX passive cooled model, but I plan on keeping it for several years. When and if I decide to sell it the buyer also gets to register the card and receive the lifetime warranty.

john what about the voltage and memory mods of 7900gt ? could the same be done to 7950gt ? and also can you tell how much you can overclock your 7950gt at stock cooling ?

Overclock all you want. In case there was any confusion my default clocks are 550/1400 and without voltmodding I am able to overclock to 600/1600 with the stock passive cooling. The full load temps are under 70C. :)

The G71 core (7950GT, 7900GT) overclocks very well with the Athlon 64 X2 series. I can provide specific numbers. My friend and I both have the G71 in the form of the XFX 7900GT model UDF7, which arrives at 470/1370.

My overclocking results: 4.5% improvement from my base scores when o/c to 562/1620 (Pentium 4 630 3.0GHz)

His results: 17% improvement from his base scores when o/c to 562/1612 (Athlon 64 X2 4600+)

Now ... this is not to mention that his BASE score is already 15% higher than my base score. , even before any o/c.
