Hi all, a friend of mine has one 7870 powering a 1440p monitor and he's content playing medium. He's looking to get two more 1440p monitors mainly for productivity reasons and is wondering if he should get one or two more 7870s with his setup:

This is his motherboard and he has a 920 clocked to 3.8GHz. Will it bottleneck badly with 2 or 3 cards even at such a high resolution? Thanks.

I would think that 2x7870 would be sufficient at med settings. You can't do 3x Crossfire with the 7870. It only has 1x crossfire finger.

Another consideration though is crossfire and Eyefinity. It still has issues on cards other than Hawaii. VSync takes care of that, but it's still something to think about. A single 290(X) might be a better solution.

He already owns a 7870 so it'd be easier to crossfire them. Is 2gb of memory going to be a problem with such a high resolution?

Yes, it will definitely become a problem. It's a problem with just one 2560x1440 display for a fast enough card.

2GB is way too small for comfort at that resolution. Yes it will work with today's games, especially if you forgo the RAM-eaters like MSAA. But it may not be enough for next-gen console port games at that resolution.

He doesn't need to get any more GPU power, if the only purpose is for productivity. If he plans to continue gaming on 1 monitor, nothing changes in gaming and productivity programs don't need an extra video card.

This is true if he doesn't want to game in Eyefinity. Good points.

It's mainly for productivity but he would like to be able to game with all 3 monitors for Battlefield 4.

Gaming with three 1440P displays in BF4 requires a lot of GPU power. Like Dual 780Ti/290X setup.

If noise is a concern I would think put the quieter card (TF) on the top so the louder card can run cooler. Either way the reference should exhaust more hot air so I bet that will be best regardless of noise preference.

I run eyefinity running 3x 1080p monitors. I started back with a 5850 1gb which worked fine as long as I didn't try for Ultra settings anymore. Running 0/2x AA with Med detail was on average to keep smooth 60fps range. I ran a single 6970 as well which was better. I could finally max out games like BFBC2 2xAA/16xaf High Detail and get solid 60fps once I ran CF 6970. I parted with it due to having to run my Fractal XL on high when gaming. I run a single 7970 now and get almost 60fps 24/7 in the same game. But when they drop in price I will be grabbing another 7970 so I have the power again for newer games like BF4. Just don't get hung up on every detail setting being maxed, the games still look great on Med or High. Worst case just disable AA even though I don't like jaggies, I do like high solid FPS more.

In my opinion having three monitors alone adds the cool looks factor over simply bumping the AA from 2x - 4x or Med to High Detail. I love three screens in my racing games along with my older G25 racing wheel. The benefits of multiple screens far out weighs having to lower my in game detail in AA. I think he will do just fine with CF 7870's. I did have to put my MiniDP adapter on one of my side monitors due to a tearing like affect which happens across different cards 5000-7000 series and different adapters even with Vsync enabled. It's a tearing like issue that doesn't bother me as long as it isn't on my main center screen.

Remember after setting up your massive eyefinity resolution for gaming you can simply jump back to three 1440p screens by using Windows Key and P. For my 3x 1080p for everyday desktop use it must sit on EXTEND but for 6040x1080 it must be on DUPLICATE and PROJECTOR ONLY allows me to use a single monitor for power savings on the GPU/Monitors. WAY BETTER than what I used to have to do to switch back in forth with profiles, etc. Those hotkeys are WONDERFUL since I only run 6040x1080 right before I enter a game and back to 3x seperate 1080p screens while in windows use.

Well maybe I could have summed it up better but o well.. long winded. Hope some of it helps. :)

It's been a total disaster for him. Every time he tries to install drivers with both cards the computer crashes. He took out the newer card and it still crashes even though it didn't crash prior to trying Crossfire. Any ideas what he could be doing wrong?

Did he completely remove the old drivers first?

He got it to work. However, even at 4GHz he seems to be bottlenecked at 1080p 120hz. Is that possible?

Yup, BF4 is a very CPU hungry game. Even 4.5GHz i7's are CPU bound and cannot pull off high enough frame rate for 120Hz displays.

I am wondering 7870's compatibility/support of 4K (2D). Does anyone know if 4K is supported with Pitcairns on 7800 series? If the answer to that question is positive, I assume it's done via Display Port, correct?

Having used sli, crossfire, and a multitude of cards throughout my career I will always suggest a single powerful gpu. Go GTX 680 and don't look back my friend. AMD drivers will give nothing but headaches.

How recently did you use crossfire? He loves his 7870s and they get better fps than my 290x.
