The problem with the corolla is that they won't have any for a couple months.

we just got a civic for my daughter - loaded about 16k
great car - fun to drive -"sporty" sort of.

corolla is probably as good or better

civic is 5 star rated for safety
corolla is a Toyota - it will never break down

the sentra (even in just the GXE trim) is still the fastest out of the bunch. and nissans are really reliable also.

None of these are 'middle-aged' women cars, they're like "college-kid-or-young-couple-starting-out-on-a-budget" cars. I was thinking more along the lines of a Camry or Accord...perhaps a Mercury Sable LS? The Sable (aka Ford Taurus) isn't a bad looking car at all, I wouldn't mind having one myself, though I like the Taurus trim better.

The accord and camary are out of her budget. She wants a compact sedan. She doesn`t drive it often either, because she walks to work.

Yeh as much as I hated the late 80s-mid 90s Taurus, the lastest one is pretty sweet.
Guy at work has a Sable in black, leather interior. It's pretty speedy and looks very nice.

Sentra, they're great bang for your buck cars and your Mom seems to be happy with it.

So tell her to buy it.

Not all middleage women are alike, of course. My mom is a retired army veteran who drives a Hummer (civilian version of HumVee.) When guys say "your mother wears army boots," I have to admit it is true.

So I guess its down to the Sentra and Corolla.

The sentra is a little cheaper then the corolla and has way better finiacing. Is it worth spending more for a corolla instead of a sentra?

I liked the 90 - 95 Taurus, it had a lot of potential. I owned a 94 Taurus SHO 5-speed with 17" wheels, tinted windows, some performance goodies, fully loaded. I think the SHO during those years looked pretty sweet, and that Ford did a great job turning a ho-hum family sedan into a sleek performer; though mechanical idiosynchracies and reliability problems were a big issue for the SHO.

I wasn't too crazy about the Taurus from 1996 - 2000, but I think the new Taurus looks great. A performance engine and trim package ala SVT Contour would set it off nicely.
