I had two 7800 GT's. Granted, they weren't GTX's but both were overclocked @ 535 on the GPU and 1.2 on the memory making them somewhat close in performance. Since then I went to the x1900xtx and I believe that it was the better deal. One card so less problems, different/better features and an easier to use vsync rather than an SLI vsync. Definately the x1900xtx if I knew then what I know now.

2 7800 gtx is undoubedly faster than 1 xtx

but it all depends on what the user is looking for, raw power(sli) or better iq(xtx)

sli isn't difficult to managed at all, you just need to plug in the two cards and you'll never need to deal with it again, so the argument of easier to manage is beyond me

as for vsync, dxtweaker would solve the problem for sli vsync

either way, both is a good buy considering they each have their good and bad

Thug, since you already have the one GTX, I would probably get another, if you can get a good price on one. You should be able to get a used one for under $300. I sure wouldnt pay more than that. If you cant get one for under $300, Id get a X1900XT over a XTX. You can get them for low $400's now, and chances are very good it will overclock to XTX speeds.

It also depends on which games are your primary games you play. If you're a big Oblivion player... I would probably just get the X1900. As you will get HDR+AA, and still great frames. If you dont play a game that has an advantage like that, it wouldnt be an issue.

Most of the time this is true, except not all the time. Some games (BF2) is faster on the XTX, than those cards in SLI.

2x7900GTs Overclocked instead.
For single card get X1900XT, no point for XTX. This will lower the price.

i have a hook up for the xtx for $349, the xt is 329. the $20 seems trivial

one more thing: there is also an option of $300 7800 gtx 512. Does the 7800 gtx 512 run with the x1900xt??? i havent seen any reviews directly comparing the two

Um. Did you bring enough for everyone, or did only a few cards fall off the back of that truck?

Hell, for $329 I'd buy a 1900 this instant, and figure out the Linux problem somehow.

The X1900XTX is generally faster than the 7900GTX which is faster than the 512MB 7800GTX.

I also went from 7800GTs@550/1300, which would outperform most 7800GTXs, to my current card and I'm glad for the switch. The 7800GTs were a little faster in a couple situations but overall the X1900XT has matched them and has been less hassle (there is more to SLI than just switching the jumpers and installing the 2nd card).

There are a lot of review sites with results showing the two against each other. One of my favorite is this site because of their comprehensive testing at higher resolution and with different features enabled. You can get a good idea of the relative performance of the the 512MB 7800GTX vs. the X1900XT(X).

thanx for the link elfear. looks like the 512 runs VERY well with the x1900 series until HDR is enabled, and then the x1900 takes over
