I'm a newb so any help is greatly appreciated, just got this setup:

Athlon XP2 4400+
EVGA 7800GTX PCI-e
Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra 9
1GB Corsair XMS 3200 RAM

So i did a clean install of win xp, installed Half Life 2 and CounterStrike Source then ran the video stress test and got fps of 160.

Then later I ran it again and got 49fps?!?! WTF? Did not change anything but got a major loss in framerates. Tried it again several times and could not break 50fps. Tried installing 77.76 drivers and still below 50 fps.
Checked video setting in options and have all settings at recommended (options indicated with *)
Any suggestions advice?? Please help! :Q

I have an asus vento case, and I think cooling is adequate, just played around with desktop management featues and loaded default profile. Then I ran the strees test three times in a row and got these results:

160fps
140fps
112fps

Everytime I ran it it would slow down??Is there something I'm missing?

thanks for all the responses! Temp of GPU is between 46 to 48 degrees C so I don't think it is that.
Just ran the stress test again and I getting 47-50fps everytime. Suggestions?

Disable Cool and Quiet for the X2s..

This might help, because alot of peoples been having problems from X2s, when playing games for sometime.

Could be the PSU? is it the fan (highly unlikely)?

what settings are you trying to play at anyway?
turn off your comp for a while to let it cool and see if your results go back up, then maybe we'll know what the problem is.

I'm not even playing the game as I'm going straight to the stress test. Setting are on high with no antialiasing and no AA. I'll try turning off the system for a while and trying the test again. Thanks ALL!

I am having the same problem with a similar setup -
AMD 4400+
Gigabyte ga-k8NXP NF4
Gigabyte 7800gtx
2gb pc3200

I am getting about 15fps in Battlefield 2, no matter what the video settings. Heat is very low, about 32C. Mobo bios is the latest, Nforce drivers are the latest. Forceware 77.72, also tried the beta .76 with no improvement.
Interesting, I get the exact same performance in WinXP 64-bit edition as I do in XP Pro sp2. (booted from another drive in same system).

I am also getting about 5200 in 3DMark05. Seems low.
The system is very stable in either OS and basically has never crashed.

I'm glad Im not the only one with that kind of a setup and problems w/ fps
I'm going to try installing the new Nfroce drivers
Cool and Quiet is an AMD feature prob to do with controlling temps?etc

I would suggest just returning card for a new one. If it does it again you know its something with your system and not the GPU and you lost nothing but maybe return shipping and a few days.

Another thing, you said the temps are ok on GPU..but did you look at the fan while your running benchmark? Maybe the fan is sticking and making GPU throttle when it does. I know they WILL do that. My 9700 Pro when fan went out it would throttle down in speed, im sure nvidia has something think that.

Did you try a few diffrent older driver versions?
