So I'm ordering an aftermarket cooler for my 7800GT. I wanna OC the crap outta this thing and i didn't get the 7800GT CO because I was planning on replacing the stock cooler anyways.

Which HSFs have given you guys the best results?

Post overclock and idle/load temps and what cooler you are using.

I'm either gonna get the NV SIlencer 5 Rev. 3 or the Zalman VF700-Cu.

I also saw a thread from a long time ago, about using an 80mm fan to screw into the stock heatsink? I ahve a bunch of 80mm fans...

What do u guys recommend?

Thanks

Id say AS5 Rev3 simply because thats what I used on my gtx, and its much better for your RAM.

Most GTs (or GTXs for that matter) seem to have a hard ceiling for clock in the BIOS regardless of temps. Check/Flash your BIOS with a known quality one.

Well I dont "have it" as in I have it, but it's not gonna be installed till Christmas. I just wanna know what cooler will keep the GPU temps the lowest. Oh and reducing case temp never hurt anyone either! :)

Definitely agree there. Both my friend and I are using NV Silencer 5 rev 2's on our 7800GT's, and the silencer doesn't help overclocking at all. What it does do is drop idle temps by 10-15 degrees C and load by 20-30C .

Note that you can use either the NV Silencer rev 2 or rev3 on the 7800GT; since it doesn't have RAM chips on the back you don't need the extra metal backplate for the back RAM chips that comes with the NV Silencer rev3.

NV Silencer 5 Rev. 3 because it takes the heat outa the case the zalman spreads it.

Surely the lower temps help overclocking a little bit?

Hmm... I can use the rev. 2 huh? I think I'm definately leaning towards the NV Silencer, the hot air being exhausted out the back of my case is a very appealing feature since the lower temps dont help OC much.

I recommend......stock cooler FTW!!!!!!! Your mileage will vary and basically the aftermarket coolers just drop idle and load temps.....notice my OC with stock cooler :)

That is a good thing you know. My GTX was hitting 82c with stock and now never sees 60c with the nvsilencer. It's a piece of mind kinda thing

Did the silencer help case temps at all? CPU temp? Northbridge?

No you cant use revision 2, you have to use revision 3. As far as lowering case temps go, I'm not sure because it was never an issue. I imagine it may have helped a tad but I already have 2 120 mm and 1 90 mm case fans, and I'm also running a venus 12 on the cpu.

Just remember how much cooler GT's run compared to GTX's Mine even with my OC idles around 39-42C and if it gets over 60C on load it probably a hot day

Pretty sure you can use rev. 2. Some people on this forum do. Thats what im getting. You should try also using some arctic silver. I use
AS ceramique and it lowered my temp by 5 degrees with stock cooling

The revision 2 power plug is a different size than the revision 3. If the 7800 GT doesnt use the same fan plug as the GTX then maybe you can use it. All I know is that you cant use it on a GTX

I'm running an NV Silencer 5 Rev2 on a 3dFuzion 7800GT. My best friend is running an NV Silencer Rev2 on a Gigabyte 7800GT.

The only difference between rev2 and rev3 is that the rev3 has an additional backplate for memory chips on the back, which the 7800GT does not have.

The NV Silencer 5 rev2 is originally built for the 6800 series of cards, which have the same kind of fan connector as the rest...

Where did you hear this? All video card fans use the exact same 2-pin fan connector AFAIK. Were you maybe trying to plug it in upside down?? The NV Silencer 5 rev2 works fine on a 7800GT as long as you don't have RAM chips on the back of the card :) . And I can't think of any 7800GT's that do have any RAM chips on the back.

--------

I've never used a 7800GTX, so maybe that one does indeed use a new fan pin header (3 pins perhaps???). Even that sounds fishy... I think the only difference is that the 7800GTX has RAM chips on the back as well, so it needs the extra backplate of the NV5 rev3. Although in that case you could always just buy some aftermarket RAMsinks as well...

Case temps drop a lot with the silencer. Think about the amount of heat a GPU outputs - that's pretty much going straight out the back of the case instead of back into it.

It's proportional to how good your case cooling is, but where the GPU is located, it's usually a tricky spot to keep cool since it's so low in the case and blowing the wrong direction.

Edit: btw- sorry for the 3 responses. Was trying to answer all questions while watching TV (a tough thing to do while keeping coherent ;) ).

My xfx GTX indeed has a 3 pin header, hence I bought the revision 3. I already had a revision 2 that was on my 6800 GT and it clearly was a 2 pin header. SO i guess you can use a revision 2 on the 7800 GT. I already stated that I was unsure of the fan header on the GT
