The 7800?s have bad texture shimmering in many games -- poor image quality. You can get rid if this ?somewhat? by running in HQ (note - the cards are benched only Q mode) but you will be taking a 10-15% hit in performance. So I would put the 7800GT slower than an X1800 XL if you are going to be running it in HQ mode.

That article I linked to also used HQ mode on Nv cards to reduce shimmering. That would explain why the x800xl came out a bit faster on average than the 6800gt, contrary to the popular myth from last year. Also gives a perspective on the 7800gt performance. Anyway, the op already decided on the 7800gt, and you cant go wrong with either at those prices.

I havent clicked the order button yet. Doin that tonite....I could change my mind...OH...this is just getting on my nerves lol....I like the sounds of the EVGA warranty and support. But like the HDR too on the X18 XL. I have to order tonite......no doubt's about it.

Edit: In personnal opinions...not fan's .....which would be better ? The more mature 7800 GT SLi ? OR....X18 XL in Crossfire ? Whichever card, Ill have dual cards in 3 months...

i think 7800GT SLi will be better..SLi is old now and it got lots of updates over tht time, crossfire is new and i think crossfire will be better with new improvements ant updates...and based on the review of the X1900XTX, the GTX512 wins lots of benches although the X1900XTX is better than GTX512..if i were u i'd go for SLi but for single card X18XL might be better with new drivers like ppl say....

You'll need to think about your motherboard too. I don't know of a single motherboard that will allow both SLI and Crossfire. So, whichever you decide will affect your motherboard purchase as well.

Another geek sucked in by the sexiness of dual cards. SLI is the alluring siren to geeks, they can't resist.

Well, which board do you have? Or do you plan on getting a new mobo too? You can only do SLI on a SLI board, and Crossfire on a Crossfire board. So if you already have a SLI board, you cant run Crossfire on it.

Although I agree too many buyers are in awe of the benchmarked performance of dual-card solutions and don't take into account the fact that they're playing on a 1280x1024 limited LCD, or only play Warcraft3.... but you're metaphor implies something bad happening to these geeks once they go dual-card? What's so bad about ultra-high performance, and, in some cases, best bang for high-end buck if the performance can't be matched by single cards at the desired settings and resolutions? Couldn't, then, the "SLI" in your post be replaced with "FX-x" "RAID" "DDR600" or any other top-of-the-line hardware?

Yea, I know about Crossfire and SLi...Both having their own respective capable boards. Just didnt find it necessary to mention about a board upgrade yet. Since it's a few month's down the road. And something new may be out by then....over todays' choice's

No. SLi had nothing to do with me wanting dual cards....Whether its SLi or CrossFire....Just want the options of expanding resolutions and better gaming

I don't think they're in awe so much of the benchmarked performance, but more in the idea of dual cards, the sexiness of it and the boost it gives to your epenis. Many of these people don't really need the 2nd card, like you said yourself, but they're getting it because it's the en vogue thing for geeks. And they ignore the fact that they can get the same performance/price from a single card just because the dual card solution is way cooler and makes for a sexier rig.

RD580 CF boards are coming out in a few weeks. They should be an improvement over RD480. Just to make you to think harder :)

IMO the GT is the right choice. It's OCed right out of the box, so it should be faster than the X1800XL in just about everything. Cooler should be quieter*, too, tho maybe not incredibly so.

* "Lautstarke" probably means noise, and the longer the bar, the noisier the card.

i never thought i'd say this.. but the quality of crossfire mboards is really what's holding me back on the ati... while i've never been a big fan of recent dual card offerings (i did have dual voodoo back in the day), i've been leaning towards dual gpu mboards just to have that option available should it make sense at a later date. the ati method just isn't as "clean" as sli (req. mast/sl and additional cables, etc.), and poor reviews of xfire motherboards give me concern.

i'm also a little disappinted the the r580 doesn't have a part in the "xl" price/performance tier (i just never saw the value in spending 25-30% more money for 1-10% performance gain).
the xl is looking much better than it did originally as the price is dropping to point it compares to the 7800gt, and with aa/af, performance is comparable as well. it has a feature edge over the nvidia, and it just has more... hmm... "appeal" (playing with new af modes, etc).

ultimately it's coming down to the evga promo for $333 shipped after mir for a 7800gt and evga nf4 sli mainboard, or spending that on just the card, and trying to figure out if i should "waste" $100 on a non-sli board until ati comes out with better boards - but either way going ati will cost me several hundred dollars more.... =/

i'd prolly be more willing to go that route if we were talking about r580, but again, at this time ati offers nothing based on r580 in the 7800GT segment..
