7800 GT or.....X1800 XL ?

Ok, Which card would do me better ? I want the Shader 3 ability which both card's support. The games I mostly play are...AOE 3, F.E.A.R, Call Of Duty 2, NFS.MW, games of the such. Going to upgrade monitor in a month or so. So Ill be wanting to game at least at 1600 resolution. Allready had the 7800 GT ordered, but can cancel for the ATi. Please help me with this. I've just sat here for 5 1/2 hours doing all the research I could, and still cannot decide. My wife likes the Ruby on the ATi card, but like's the green on the 7800 Gt card..LOL...help me please

Only honest and true opinion's needed here. I need no fanboys of either company, that will just make it harder on me. Thanks people's

Well AOE3 seems to favor NV cards.

The 7800GT would do fine. It has a slight performance edge against the XL.
I would keep it.

edit - EVGA or Leadtek.

Honestly, it's a push. Both cards will be able to do exactly what you want it to.

That being said, I vote for the 7800GT slely because of the price advantage. EVGA all the way

I say get whatever is cheaper. Since you already ordered the 7800gt though, just stick with that.

I have both COD2 and F.E.A.R. I haven't played F.E.A.R. without SLI, but COD2 was smooth with a single 7800GT. Stick with the nVidia card.

I'd go with the 7800 GT since it can OC to 7800 GTX performance levels fairly easily whereas the X1800XL needs some voltage tweaks to get it up to X1800XT performance levels. As Cookie Monster pointed out, AOE3 runs much better on the 7800 GT and overall it is a bit faster than the X1800XL. Still, both are good choices.

Edit- Go with the evga 7800 GT CO edition.

More recent reviews place the X1800XL and 7800GT on pretty even ground. If you overclcok, the X1800XL has a big advantage over the 7800GT. Both my 7800GTs overclocked an astounding 4% on the core and 14% on the memory while my brother's X1800XL gained 34% on the core and 40% on the memory. Couple that with the HQ AF and it's an easy choice IMO.

I don't plan on overclocking which ever card I get....so that don't matter to me. I just like the stock performance which from either card should be great. One thing though, if the GT has the slight performance over the XL ? How come the XL scores more in 3D Mark ? I don't use those programs though. Just seen them on website's. The XL right now for Connect 3D is $319 at the Egg. The GT is $20 cheaper..

If stock is what you're shooting for, look for the EVGA 7800GT CO SE (part # 516). It's $20 less than the regular CO because supposedly its clocke dlower, but my CO SE came stock 470/1100, CO speeds. The CO is hands down a better deal than the X1800XL if you dont plan to overclock.

X1800XL scores higher than the 7800GT in 3DM05, but in 3DM06, ATI cards get raped by Nvidia cards. a single GT scores almost as high as a X1800XT, likewise, GT SLI scores almost the same as X1800XT Crossfire.

I'd still say the X1800XL after playing with a pair of 7800GTs and seeing my brother's X1800XL in action. Look at some of the recent X1900XT reviews that have the 7800GT and X1800XL pitted against each other. They should have some benchmarks of the games you play.

Whichever one is cheaper. The 7800gt is slightly faster overall without AA. Once you add AA, they're dead even in performance, and all you have to decide is whether or not the extra features are worth the higher cost of the XL. If the price is the same, I'd take the XL.

In the games you mentioned, performance will be pretty close. But in AOE3 7800GT will destroy X1800XL. EVGA also has 90-day step up program if anything. And 7800GTs go for less $. So I'd pick 7800GT.

Id get the X1800XL. Its a beast when it comes to overclocking. I got mine up to 621/702 from 500/500 with a few minor bumps in voltage for the core and mem. All this with the stock HSF and some AS5 on the core.

The official website is down for maintenance; so I can't post official info. From what people said on these forums, it allows you to "step up" to a faster videocard within 90 days. So if you decide to get 7800GTX or G71 in 90 days, you simply pay the price difference. I am not sure though how it works entirely because what if 7800GTX 256mb drops to the price of 7800GT? (I guess you'd pay the price difference between the price of 7800GT then and 7800GTX not what you initially paid and market price of 7800GTX 90 days from now).

Any EVGA owners can correct me please?

7800GT EVGA. I have it. Voltmodded it and OC'ed it to 505/1180 for a score of 8200 in 3dmark05

P.S. 7800GT also has Transparency Supersampling AA.
